Ethan:
“Kara, wake up,” Ethan whispered in her ear. “It’s your birthday, and that means it’s our wedding day.”
Kara’s eyes flew open. “What did you say?”
“Happy Birthday.”
“Not that. What was that other thing you said? Something about getting married?”
“I came to get you so we could get married.”
“You mean just run off and get married right now?”
Ethan’s heart constricted, but he did his best to keep calm. “I thought you said you wanted to marry me on your birthday.”
“I did, but--”
“You didn’t mean it.”
“I didn’t expect you to show up in my room this early and expect me to be ready to go.”
“I wanted to come early so we didn’t have to worry about the advisors.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me this was the plan so I could be ready?”
He offered her a grin. “You don’t want to get married in your pajamas?”
“Not really.”
Ethan bore his eyes into hers. “But you do want to marry me, right?”
“You know I do.”
“Do you want to marry me now, or do you want to wait?”
“Would you mind waiting?”
His face fell. “Not if that’s what you want.”
“I mean would you mind waiting until I change my clothes and maybe brush my teeth?”
Ethan resumed his smile. “I’d wait for you forever.”
“Is that what you want?” she teased.
“I want to marry you today.”
Kara leaned forward. “Then you shall have it my prince,” she whispered in his ear, and Ethan’s heart skipped a beat.
So close; they were so close to the truth, but it didn’t seem important. At the moment, all he cared about was making her his wife. The rest could wait a little bit longer.
Kara:
“I can’t believe we’re married,” Kara marveled.
Only a few hours had passed since Ethan showed up in her room, and now they were married. The whole thing had been easy. All they needed to get married in Las Vegas was proof they were eighteen and the money for the license and the ceremony.
Ethan insisted on picking the chapel and when they got there, Kara saw why. He’d chosen a chapel that did gothic weddings. They were married by a woman dressed as a vampire while two acrobats performed tricks above them.
Now husband and wife, they lay side by side in the bed of their rented hotel room. Kara was still trying to wrap her mind around it. They were married! Ethan was her husband. She was married to a vampire. It was kind of crazy to think about it like that.
She reached for his hand and twisted the silver band on his left ring finger. “How come you picked silver?”
“I like it better than gold. Do you like it?”
“Actually I do. When did you get it?”
“Last summer when I bought your engagement ring.”
