Kara:
“So, Kara, how does it feel to practically be the queen?”
Megan was talking about being the homecoming queen. Somehow, Kara ended up getting nominated for homecoming queen. Probably because she and Ethan were going out and he’d gotten nominated for homecoming king. It was more of a pain in the ass than an honor. Instead of being able to hang out with her friends at the game tonight, she had to get dressed up and go through a bunch of stupid junk to find out if they won. She even had to wear a formal dress to a football game.
“I’m not the queen yet,” Kara said.
“I don’t know why you sound so mad,” Allison said. “Being nominated is an honor. You should give thanks to God.”
Kara rolled her eyes. Nearly a month had passed since that note sailed under their door, and Allison was still on her quest to prove vampires were real. Not only that, but she was still wearing her cross twenty-four seven. Worst of all was the way she was taking the religion to heart. Almost every day, they heard about God’s blessings. She even prayed before she ate any of her meals. It was all getting sort of ridiculous.
After three years of dating Ethan, and being up close and personal with the supernatural, Kara had pretty much given up on the idea of God. Someone else believing was fine, but she knew better.
“At least you and Ethan are both nominated,” Mina pointed out. “That’ll probably make it more fun.”
“Not if one of them wins and the other one doesn’t,” Rochelle laughed.
“Please,” Shirelle scoffed. “They’ll both win. Ethan’s already king of the school. This will just make it official.”
“I still think it’s a stupid tradition,” Kara said. “Not to mention it’s almost October, and I have to wear a dress. I’ll probably freeze my ass off.”
Though she laughed along with her friends, Kara was only half kidding. Sometimes, she hated being popular. It might not have been so bad if it wasn’t for the reason she and Ethan were so popular. They hadn’t done anything to deserve the adoration, if that was even the right word. It was more like people were afraid of not liking them because Ethan was the prince.
When they came out of the dorm and she saw Ethan waiting for her, Kara almost changed her mind. He looked really good in his tuxedo. This wasn’t the first time she’d seen him dressed in a tuxedo, but that didn’t change how hot he looked.
“Oh, Kara, you look so pretty,” Ivy squealed. “I hope you win. I voted for you.”
“You do look beautiful,” Ethan said, reaching to take her hand and press it to his lips.
“This is the same dress I wore to the ball last year,” Kara reminded him.
There was no way she was spending money for a formal dress she had to wear to a freaking football game. Talk about a waste!
“And you look just as beautiful now as you did then,” Ethan assured her.
Rochelle made a face. “God, you two are so disgusting. Don’t you ever get sick of being so in love?”
“Thou shall not take the Lord’s name in vain,” Allison quoted.
“Oh, go to hell,” Rochelle snapped, and everyone but Allison laughed.
“Speaking of going places, don’t you think we should go?” Jax spoke up. “We don’t want to miss the coronation.”
“The what?” Rochelle frowned.
“You know, the coronation,” Jax said again. “That’s what they call the ceremony where they crown a king or a queen, and we don’t want to miss it.”
