Kara:
“So, how big of a disaster do you think this is going to be?” Shirelle asked.
She was talking about the winter program. After weeks and weeks of rehearsing the complicated Celtic songs, the night to perform them had finally arrived. Kara had no idea what to expect of the performance.
They were fourth year music students, and she thought they’d sounded pretty good in their recent rehearsals. It was the underclassmen she wondered about. Every year, their music teacher had all of her classes perform together. Though they never rehearsed together, they always managed to sound perfect. They’d never done anything this complicated though, and she didn’t know if the less experienced singers would be able to handle it. If they didn’t, she really didn’t care. She knew she should have, but she didn’t.
The only thing she really cared about was having the chance to spend three weeks away from Bernard when it was all over. Ever since she and Ethan had taken that impromptu trip to Castle Bran, their friends had gotten even tighter with their security measures. She and Ethan had literally not had one single minute alone since that night, and she hated it. By this time tomorrow, she’d be back in New York where she’d have the chance to breathe.
“Maybe it won’t be that bad. We’ve sounded pretty good in rehearsals,” Allison voiced Kara’s thoughts.
“Who cares anyway?” Rochelle challenged. “The spring production is what really matters for us.”
“I can’t wait for the spring production,” Kara agreed. “I’ve been waiting four years for the chance to sing some real opera.”
“I’ll just be glad to pick my own costume,” Shirelle countered, surveying herself in the mirror with a disgusted look on her face.
Once again, they were wearing white shirts and black skirts. It was the same outfit they’d worn every year, except for the one year they’d been allowed to wear red choir robes. Shirelle was right. The black and white church look was tired. For their songs in the spring production, Kara and Ethan were going to have the wardrobe department copy their costumes after those worn in the movie version of The Phantom of the Opera. Hopefully, they’d turn out as grand as she was picturing, but these were high school kids making the costumes. That was probably why they never had real costumes for the winter production.
“Ah, the M&M’s are here for Kara,” Rochelle laughed when there was a knock on their door.
Rochelle was right. Megan and Mina had been the ones to knock on the door, but they weren’t the only ones waiting in the hall. Ivy and her roommates stood with them. Ivy and Cindy were both dressed in white shirts and black skirts while Savannah and Vanessa wore black leotards and pink tights.
“You sing too?” Kara asked Ivy.
“What’d you think I did?”
“I never thought about it. Does your whole family sing?”
“Dominic doesn’t. He’s one of those genius types.”
So Dominic was a night vampire too? That was another thing Kara hadn’t given thought to, not that it mattered.
“Who’s Dominic?” Allison asked.
“My waste of space younger brother,” Ivy answered.
“Does he look like your older brother?” Cindy sighed, and Shirelle sneered.
“Is your family coming tonight?” Kara changed the subject.
“My father isn’t, but my mother is,” Ivy answered.
