Chapter Two (Part One)***

I peered behind the rocks with unease. What I saw had me staring in shock.

"Bernie?" I whispered.

I had never been so happy to see my dog in my entire life. Bernie had his jaws clamped tightly around the monsters discolored neck. Greenish black blood dripped from the puncture wounds and down Bernies snout. The monsters once red eyes were now drained of color turning a bottomless black. Bernie shook his head once more for good measure and with a sick cracking sound dropped the hellish creature to the earth. Its head hit bonelessly against the earth bouncing side ways and back.

I crouched down onto one knee and smoothed the fur on Bernies head. I ripped a piece of my pants leg off and cleaned the blood away from Bernies mouth. He wagged his tail as if nothing strange had ever happened. Like he hadn't just ripped a Death Eaters throat out. Things were so much different now. It had been six months since the world came crashing down and I still couldn't seem to grasp it all.

I turned back around and soothed a wild eyed Marcus while Lady was no where to be seen. She had got out of here like a bat out of hell and I couldn't say I blamed her. I would search for her at first light. There was no use in stumbling around in the dark with the Blood Moon full ahead. I didn't want to have to confront another red eyed monster tonight. Hopefully, the little horse could stay alive for a few more hours. I could only hope.

I sat with my back against a boulder for the remainder of the night. Not allowing myself to sleep, not that I could anyways, but I needed to keep watch. I was prepared this time. Let them come. The German Shepperd stayed right by my side listening while Marcus grazed on the shrubs growing a few feet behind me.

By the time the sun began slithered through the claw like trees I was already packed and mounted firmly onto the black horses back. Bernie followed behind us as we steadily marched through the forest on quiet hoofs avoiding the patches of leaves that were beginning to form on the ground more and more as days passed as the season changed. My bow was at the ready and my eyes flickered, watching for any threats. Thirty minutes later and Lady was still going unseen. Finally, I came to a small creek and I dismounted to quench my thirst. My throat was dry and I was completly parched. Marcus gulped the water but froze as a large black snake swam by. Bernie charged into the shallow water and swam after it. He came back holding it in his teeth seeming proud of his kill. He layed it at my feet and I grasped it in my hand examining it closely to insure it was not venomous. It would make a great meal for tonight. I had only ate two crackers so far and I was getting impatient. I held the snake out and slid my knife from my boot. The blade sliced cleanly releasing the head from the body. I tossed Bernie the head as a reward and he caught it mid air, eating it whole. I let the body of the snake lay over my saddle for later.

After I filled a plastic bottle that was crushed at the botton of my bag full of water I kicked Marcus forward. I had wasted enough time on trying to find Lady. I hated that she was gone, but I was running out of time. We followed the road for hours, not seeing anything living.

As I was scouting for a place to camp I heard something rustling behind me. Something large. Marcus tensed and I turned around looking. Bernie snarled as something made its presents known. The forest was becoming shadowed as the sun was going down and I couldn't make out what stood before me, but then a voice rang out. Not a strange voice, but a all too familiar one.

"Lose something, Baby Sister?" He called out.

The person stepped forward sitting proudly on Ladys back. His hulking figure made Ladys bay body look even smaller. Surprise shimmered through me. Not just surprise, but mind numbing relief. My dry lips cracked into a wide smile that I hadn't worn in months.

"Brother?!"
