Chapter One Part One ****
My boot clad feet submerged into the thick mud and leaves of the forest floor with each foot fall as I raced through the trees. My breath came rapidly in pants that strained my chest as I pushed away from the snarls in the distance. The creatures were after me and the fresh kill rabbit I had shoved hastily in the waist band of my old jeans. Starvation had drove me out into the night and I didn't plan on losing a rare kill to Death Eaters. My hunt had turned into a chase with me on the receiving end as the blood from the small animal lured them from the ground. The bloody red moon hovered above me in the early hours of dawn casting pink hues over the land and trees playing tricks on my eyes. My bow and arrows were clutched tightly to me as I saw my old farm house in the distance. Slight relief rushed through my body down to my very fingers but receded as another shriek sounded closer behind me. The sound of monsters only ever dreamed about before. Leading the monsters back to the house was out of the option no matter the temptation of its safety.
I weaved through trees grabbing loose limbs as I went to throw in the path of their bodies as a diversion. A large oak tree stood firm and welcoming with low hanging branches a few feet away and I lunged for a branch in pure desperation and to my complete displeasure discarded my bow, needing my arms free. Using my upper body strength and thighs I began climbing quickly to higher limbs away from the claws below shredding the bark of the great oak with ease. They climbed several feet only to fall back to the ground over and over again. Twenty feet above the ground I looked on still breathing sharply in puffs that clouded the air around me a slight chill nipping the early morning. Three Death Eaters circled below crying out at the loss of a meal with the pink and red hues of the moon glittering across their shinny grey backs. Spines protruded in awkward angles as they slinked around on four limbs, waiting. I hugged the trunk of the tree to my chest ignoring the bite of the bark against my skin. The small rabbit still held squished against my belly, bloody yet cherished. All I could do was pray and wait for the sun to rise so they would recede back into their hiding holes within the forest.
Hours passed slowly and the creatures never silenced twisting below sniffing the air repeatedly. Ever so often they would leap and latch onto the tree only to fall to the earth again slowly getting farther up the tree. As I contemplated on abandoning my perch the sun began to trickle and shine though the darkness and blood surrounding me. The Death Eaters ran as soon as light touched the beloved branches of the oak and disappeared into the over growth. I waited what felt like another hour before I could brave the climb down to the ground. My body was stiff and even numb in some places but soon heated with nerves and fear. My bow greeted me at the bottom half sunk into the dirt from being trampled but still intact to my relief. I retreated to the old farm house at a run and slammed the front door behind me only to slide down to the hard wood floor in tears.
