"You're not wearing that are you?" Katherine asked as soon as I walked in through the front door. She was wearing a short blue dress that stopped before her knees even when she sat with her legs crossed on the couch.
Of course tonight was the night we had to go out to dinner.
"Nope, I'm here to get changed." I half smiled as I walked upstairs.
"So what happened?" She was right behind me now.
"Excuse me?"
She sidestepped me before I could make it to my room. "What's going on with you? I haven't been gone that long."
"Well, not everything's about you Katherine." It wasn't her. I just didn't have the right words to explain everything to her. She didn't need to know.
"No, duh. This is about you. Ever since I've got here you've been a complete bitch to me!"
I crossed the walk into my room and shuffled into my closet. I changed my simple pink top for a long sleeve shirt that I paired with a skirt and a scarf. I looked over at my door annoyed to see Katherine still standing there.
"What else can I do for you, princess?"
She threw her phone onto my bed.
"You can stop acting like you're the Queen of the world for starters, or you could tell me while you're never home, or what you're hiding from me?"
"Katherine! It's really nothing, I promise."
"But you're okay?"
"I promise you that I'm okay, but I can't tell you. I wish I could." I patted her hand. "Can we please go though? Mom gets mad when we're late."
Her attention was caught by her phone lighting up.
"It's Charlie, I'm gonna take it and wait for you in the car."
I nodded. I felt bad but not telling her was what's best.

"Ooh girls! You're both here wonderful!" I heard my mother call to us from a back table. My father stood behind her with a hand on her chair.
"Hi mom," we both said in unison before taking our seats next to each other.
"So, I heard there was a technical difficulty at school today. Something at the cheer off? Isn't that right, dear?" She looked pointedly at my father to back her up with support.
"We also talked about not discussing this at dinner, Karen," he calmly replied taking a sit of his water.
"If anyone would ask me, they would know that it was nothing but a technical difficulty. There is absolutely nothing to worry about."
"Well, maybe I should get some parents on the phone. I'm sure Tanner's parents would love to hear what was going on."
"No, there was more of us than there was of, uh," I glanced at Katherine, "there was enough of us that the technical difficulty was more a scare than anything."
"I think we should discuss this."
Katherine's eye roll could be heard from across the restaurant. "Seriously? What is this about?"
"Oh, it's nothing to worry you, darling."
"Nothing to worry me? You guys are walking on egg shells around me! Reese won't tell me anything, and now this about a "technical difficulty?" She stood back from the table and walked out of the restaurant.
We all watched her go, each one of us nervous to go after her.
"Are we betting on if she made her flight for tonight instead of tomorrow?"
"I'll head to the airport. You two go back home to see if she went there." My dad spoke before walking my mom and I out. This wasn't the first time that Katherine had done something like this. She always had a flair for the dramatics. Last christmas my parents wouldn't let her boyfriend at the time come over to spend the night, so she booked a plane ticket and met him anyways.
My mom and I drove in silence. I didn't want to bring up the cheer competition and risk her wanting to call every parent even more, and she seemed to be focused on Katherine.
As soon as we parked I raced back up to my room. There was a note left on my bed.
Just be safe.
It was from Katherine.
"Reese, honey? Your dad found Katherine, but she's set on leaving. Do you want to come with me to the airport to say goodbye?"
I held up the note to her without showing her what it said. "No, we already said our goodbyes." She nodded and shut my door behind her as she walked out.
I glanced at the clock, it was hardly 7:00. I sighed.
There was one plus to all of this.
Quickly I pulled out my phone and dialed Sterling's number.
"I have a house all to myself."
"Yeah? What about dinner?" He said, although I could hear his car starting in the background.
"It's a very long story but it ends with her on a plane and me at my house alone."
"You inviting me to an empty house, does this make us a couple now?"
"I didn't even know you knew that word?" I laughed.
"Couple? You're right, it does sound oddly foreign."
I didn't have time to combat with a snarky reply before he knocked on my door.
"Oh, sorry, only couples can be in the house alone together," I said opening the door.
"Well, lucky you're my girlfriend then isn't it." He smirked as my mouth dropped. "But I have a better idea, let's go somewhere."
