"Mom," my hands were shaking as I lifted the phone to my ear. I was more nervous about calling her than I was of fighting.
"Honey, it's the middle of the day, are you okay?"
"We need you at school. You and dad. Now." I heard her gasp through the phone.
"Why? Is something wrong."
"Something is very wrong, mother. Listen, we will hold them, but we need you, please." I hung up the phone before she could say anything else.
"Is she coming?" Sterling asked making sure to keep his eyes on the dark fog that continued to creep closer.
"I hope so, yours?"
He nodded swiftly and pointed back towards the school. Two figures were walking the length of the school with their hands stretched palms facing the stone of the building.
"Their casting the school. Keeping the innocent inside and protecting them from whatever this is," he said answering my unspoken question.
"Wow, I'm meeting your parents," I joked pushing his shoulder. This made him crack a slight smile before throwing his arms around me shoulders and kissing the top of my head. "You're going to ruin your reputation."
Ignoring the latter comment he turned my head to whisper into my ear, "No matter what happens, I will protect you. You're mine." He quickly kissed my lips before pulling away to meet his parents who were calmly approaching.
I only had to glance at them to know exactly where Sterling got his looks. They were beautiful. There was no doubt that they were older, as old as my parents, but they carried themselves with grace. His mom's dark hair was tied perfectly back into a bun that sat at the nape of her neck. His father worked around her. When she moved he moved around her, always next to her, always aware of her. His face was a copy of his son's only older.
"Mom, dad, this is Reese." I took a deep breath and stuck out my hand.
"It's so nice to meet you! I've heard so much about you!" She nodded my hand away and instead pulled me into a hug. If I was expecting anything about his parents they were the exact opposite. They were warm and open. HIs mother glowed with excitement to meet me and I could tell it wasn't an act.
"It's very nice to meet you too," I said after we both had pulled away. Somewhere in between the hug and our hellos Sterling and his dad had walked off to the side and seemed to be in a deep conversation.
"No doubt discussing the plan." She rolled her eyes at her two boys and laughed a musical laugh. If these two were supposedly dark magic, maybe I had everything wrong.
I asked if we should join them, but her answer was drawn short by the arrival of my frantic mother. She was moving at lightening speed only to stop when she was taken aback by Sterling's parents.
Sterling's parents remained calm and seemed to be indifferent to the arrival of my parents. My parents did not take it so well. My mother made sure to keep her distance asking only questions that were necessary.
Unfortunately for me, when Sterling and his dad had finished talking he came and stood directly next to me, too close for just acquaintances, giving my mother a heart attack.
"What is this?" My mom said angrily, cutting of Mrs.Morgon.
"Nothing. Let's just all be on the same page," I tried to deescalate the situation.
"Same page? My daughter's with a Morgon and you tell me to be on the same page!"
Sterling's mom turned her entire body to face my mother, "Karen, what was that supposed to mean?"
