'Give her time son, she has had a lot of information thrown at her in one small sitting.'
My mother smiles at me, trying to reassure me that Josie will return to me and not hate me. We were still in the lounge, discussing the future. Not that we could discuss much without Miranda or Lucian being around. Preston had been at the bar, pouring more drinks. He wanders back over and passes one to me, slumping into the lounge beside me.
'The mark on her wrist is gone, so it is confirmed that she is pregnant.' Preston says.
'He shoots, he scores.' Claude says doing his best basketball impression.
'Claude!' my father scowls at him.
Claude shrugged at him as if he didn't care. Which he didn't, we were among good, close friends and if he couldn't be himself around them then he wouldn't want them as friends. My father just had to realise this was modern life and Claude's nonsense was very much normal. Claude and normal in the one sentence, that was unusual.
'There is one slight problem though.' Stella says. 'When we were chanting, Preston came in and his timing was out of sync with mine.'
'So this means what?' my father worries.
'Oh, nothing bad, it just means that there is a very high chance there will be two in there. You know, two chants, two babies.'
Claude roars with laughter, Montana gets excited at the thought and my parents get all wistful, wrapping themselves up in each other, looking at me like I had done something extra special.
'On a more pressing subject, the council....'
'How long can we hold out before we tell them? I don't want unnecessary panic over nothing.'
'Yes, they do tend to panic a little too much.'
'You know they are going to think she's another Melody.'
'Of course they are.' my father says dryly 'They think that all phoenix will be the same but forget about the one that still walks this planet and has never shown one dark emotion. They are all narrow minded idiots.'
'Yes.' Preston hums 'Well a couple of days I suppose, we will have to wait and see what Lucian comes back to us with. Now, the doctor is coming tomorrow, correct?'
My mother nods at Preston.
'At least she is pregnant with a vampire child, there is nothing that can harm it.'
After Preston and Stella leave I find myself outside her door, listening to her heart beat, knowing that I get to listen to it forever, it won't die, she will always blush and there is no need to turn her, she will live for an eternity. She calls out for me in her sleep and I cannot help it, I enter her room.
I sit on the edge of her bed, watching her as she sleeps, dreaming of something, no more nightmares. I wonder if the pliancy spell is still working so I ask her if she wants me in her bed, she says yes. Awesome, a few hours more. Instantly she folds into my arms, snuggling against my chest. I knew things weren't exactly good between us but this was a good end to a terrible evening. Well maybe not terrible. She had her confirmation that she would live a very long life. Pregnant with a child, no matter what happens between us I will always ensure that she has more money than she will ever need. I tried to remember what her wishes were, wondering how many she had managed to check off in one night.
'What were they?' I whispered in the dark. 'You said a long life.'
I grinned as I thought about her now, no longer dying, she was the dark being that everyone was looking for. Miranda had told us that she had been sent to us, somewhere on this little planet was one child that would change our world.
'Long life ensured provided you stay away from heart surgery which you don't need, so no problems there.'
She murmured something against my skin, the warmth of her body was glorious. I pulled her tight to my body, wanting to keep her here forever. Hopefully when she woke in the morning she would forget the bad parts of tonight. My mind snorted with laughter, as if that was going to happen. Enjoy it while it lasts it mocked me.
'What else was there? You've got that child you wanted, stick around and I'll give you dozens more.'
I chuckled quietly at the thought of all that baby making. It would be a great life, I just had to convince her that the next child to be created wouldn't be with everyone listening.
'You will never be poor again, I promise.' I whispered as I ran my fingers through her hair.
Soft silken black hair with strands and tips of pink. Josie was beyond perfection, Godfrey had a real talent for creating stunning creatures.
'Now we were at three, what were the last two? Ahh, happiness and a faithful and loving partner. That's me baby. Now all I need is for you to not hate me.'
