I wake feeling a cool body wrapped around me. His hand on my stomach, his cool breath on my shoulder. It is still raining outside; the water falls to the ground quietly as the thunder begins to rumble. The skies dark, the clouds grey, scary weather for a scary castle.
'Who let you in here?' I say pushing him away from my body.
'You did.'
'Why would I do that? I do remember being angry at you.'
And then it hits me, the past few days I have been so unusually agreeable.
'Stella put a spell on me, didn't she?'
He nods.
'How could you?'
Lightning cracks outside the window, hitting one of the pine trees in the distance. The sky turns a dark purple as more lightning strikes down around the grounds.
'I needed to make sure you were ok.'
'I was ok; I didn't need your help. I don't need your help.'
I roll onto my side and stare out the windows, watching the terrible weather.
'Fine. Be like that.' he snaps, seconds later my door slams shut.
The heavens finally let go, sending the rain down heavy and fast. It pelts against the window so hard it looks like it is going to break. I laid in bed wondering why I had been so horrible to him. Sure I was still angry at the hallway sex but I thought that by the time I had fallen asleep I had almost forgiven him. Maybe pregnancy hormones were making me a nasty cow. I sighed getting up from the bed as my morning ritual walks in and opens the curtains with her usual cheery good morning. Clearly she didn't know the nasty cow was out of the paddock. The maid potters around the room, tiding the lounge area as another maid walks in with breakfast, announcing that the doctor has arrived. Isabelle brings the woman in. Tall and blonde, dressed in a sharp business suit, she looks no older than me, but I am guessing that it isn't accurate seeing as Isabelle looks like she is in her forties. She passes a little container to me and asks for a sample. I return a few minutes later with more than enough of a sample for the good doctor and go about eating my breakfast, I am starving.
'Congratulations Josie.' she says warmly.
'Wow, that must be some fancy magic you guys got goin' on. To be able to tell that I am pregnant after just a few hours.' I say rather dryly.
'Josie, hormone levels in a vampiric pregnancy are always high, even from the very first second after impregnation.'
She passes the sample to the maid who scurries away to the bathroom.
'Now you will need to keep up with your vitamins, you will most likely suffer the things that women suffer during pregnancy only you will have it twice fold due to the elevated hormones. The plus side is that the child will grow healthily and there will be no defects and the birth will be smooth sailing, guaranteed. I will return in one month, if you need anything, don't hesitate to call me.'
She hands me a business card and follows the maid out of the room. Isabelle sits on the lounge beside me.
'How are you feeling?'
'Great.' I mutter, my mouth full of food.
'Really?'
'Yes. I am no longer dying apparently, I am pregnant and I am being held captive in a freakish looking castle by a bunch of vampires who think that I am some sort of new type of dark being come to earth to knock out a few kids.' I look at her, she seems a little shocked. 'No offence.'
