Cas' POV
Cas returned from his weekend at home on Monday, prepared for a fairly easy week of day shifts. He changed into his scrubs and washed his hands, making sure he didn't get any of the soap on his wrists.
He walked out and waved at his friend Kevin, who graduated early and was working on becoming a vascular surgeon.
Cas walked by Dean's room and stopped to look in for a second.
Seeing the slow rise and fall of Deans' bandaged chest made his heart die a little bit inside. Like the author's soul. Cas tore his eyes away and went to go check on another patient.
He grabbed a clipboard, making sure it was the right one for Jesse Turner
"Hey there Jesse? How are you feeling today?" Cas inquired with a false peppy expression on his face.
The blonde looked up from her cup of ice cream. "I'm ok, I guess Mr. Castiel." He replied in a raspy voice. The 10-year-old had just gotten his tonsils out and was recovering nicely.
"Please, call me Castiel, or Cas. Mr. Castiel is way too formal. Let me take a look at your throat."
Cas grabbed a tongue depressor as Jesse opened his mouth. Cas placed it on Jesse's tongue and applied light pressure.
He removed the depressor and scribbled "reduced swelling, still inflamed."
"The swelling has gone down a great bit. It's still red, though." He explained and turned to Jesse's mother, Julia. "He will be out by either Wednesday or Thursday. I'll be back in a few hours."
Julia smiled and thanked Cas. She turned to her son and they started talking about their favorite ice cream flavors.
Castiel walked back to Dean's room, exchanging Jesse's report for Dean's.
He walked past the copious amount of flowers, both alive and dead, that had accumulated over Deans's stay of three long weeks.
Cas took a look at the heart monitor, and took a double take. Dean's heart rate had risen significantly, to the point where he was close to waking up. Cas could see Dean's eyes moving under his eyelids, and his breathing had quickened.
Cas suppressed a squeal of excitement and he took off to go find Gabe.
Whilst sprinting through the halls, a hand grabbed his arm, bringing him to a halt. Balthazar asked him "Where the hell are you going in such a hurry?"
Out of breath, Cas replied with "Dean *gasp* Winchester *wheeze* showing *cough* signs of alertness!"
"Then what the fuck are you doing? I'll get Gabe, you're supposed to stay with the goddamn patient, dumbass!" Balthazar reminded him of the rule.
Cas took off back towards Dean as Balthazar jogged in the opposite direction "Thanks, Balthy!" he yelled behind him.
Balthazar stuck his head around the corner he had just rounded. "Don't call me Balthy, asshat."
Chuckling, Cas kept on running, a giant grin growing across his face. He accidentally slid past the door and stumbled. He regained his balance and bust into the room. A few minutes later, Gabe and Balthazar arrived.
"Never fear, Dr. Sexy is here!" Gabriel announced. Cas rolled his eyes as he showed Gabe and Balthazar what was going on.
"Call in his family." Gabe ordered.
Within 30 minutes, three flannel clad people were in the room. Dean's father and brother were talking to Gabe while his mother was seated next to Dean's hospital bed. Dean's father walked over and stood by his mother with his hands on her shoulders. Dean's brother, however, was locked in a conversation with Gabe. Somehow, Cas knew that the discussion was going to quickly drift away from Dean.
"Gabriel, can I talk to you for a sec?" Cas dragged Gabe away from the enormous man.
"Come on Cas, I was about to get his number!" He complained.
"Dude, you're a professional, act like one. Now give me the names of the family members" Cas demanded.
"John and Mary, husband and wife, Dean's parents, and Sam, Dean's younger brother." Gabe responded.
"Ok, now go get Dr. Shurley." Cas ordered.
"I thought I was in charge?" Cas raised an eyebrow at Gabe as he sighed. "Fiiiinnnneee I'll go." Cas patted him on the head as he turned to go find the doctor.
Cas walked back into the room. "It would help Dean to wake up if you talked to him." He suggested.
"Could you give us a little privacy, please?" Mary requested.
"Sure thing." Cas stepped out and went for a coffee break.
When he got to the cafeteria, he was enveloped in a bear hug by his old high school friend, Charlie.
"Charlie, what are you doing here?" He said as he hugged her back.
"Oh, my girlfriend is getting her appendix removed, that's all." She replied as she pulled away.
"Hope it goes well. Hey, remember Dean, the guy from my fraternity?"
"You mean your super gay frat brother crush? How can I not? He's such a closet case!"
Cas chuckled "Ok yeah, him."
"What about him?"
"Well he may or may not be here in the hospital and I may or may not have been assigned to watch him."
"OH MY FREAKING GOD"
"Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh he's in a coma and he just started showing signs of waking up. His family is here now."
"Ok, ok, ok. Good luck, then! I should be going, Dorothy should be waking up soon."
"See you later!" He waved as she walked away.
Cas returned to Dean's room where Gabe and Balthazar were standing outside the room, heatedly discussing their favorite show, Blue Bloods.
"Gabe, where's Chuck?" Cas asked.
"I don't know. Nobody has seen him for several days." Gabe responded
"Fucking asshole." Balthazar added.
All three of them jumped when they heard Sam yell from inside.
"He's waking up!" Sam shrieked.
The three musketeers sprinted into the room just in time to see Dean lift his head.
"Who the fuck are you people?"
