As the other females and I trudged into our barracks, you could feel the exhaustion in the air. All I wanted to do was to lay on my bed but I knew if I did I would just mess it up and we still had bed check later that night, so I opted for the floor instead. I started trying to fix my hair as another female sat next to me.
"Its never going to stay if to do it that way." She said.
"Oh." I replied looking at her. "How do you do it then?" She looked at me and then stood up and walked over to her bag, pulling out a rolled up sock. She came back over, and sat behind me, helping me get the pins out. She then taught me how to use the sock, putting it around my pony tail and then wrapping the hair around it, finally securing it with a ponytail holder and 3 bobypins. Much less then I had used. "There you go." She said, looking pleased with her work. I gave my head a few shakes and, after feeling it was secure, smiled at her. "Thank you..." I hesitated realizing I didn't know her name. "Small." She offered me with me a smile. "Thank you small." I said "I'm Mellor."
"Well it's nice to meet you Mellor." She said. "Nice to meet you too." I replied.
Suddenly a voice sounded throughout the room. "At Ease!" They said, and we all scrambled to our feet and stood at ease. Anxiously, I looked at Small and I knew she was feeling the same way. Then, finally, a drill sergeants voice rang out through the room and the second round of smoking had begun.
