Since this is a military book, there's a bunch of military terms used in here. To help you out here's a quick list of things you'll want to know
Phonetic alphabet-
This is the military's version of the alphabet. They use it so there's no confusion when they talk about things over radios and such, and since so many letters sound similar, (such as B, C, D, E, G, P, V, and Z) they want to make sure there's no confusion. I'll list it down below so you can get kinda use to it.

Lima (pronounced leema)

Papa (pronounced pa pa)

So, the word cookies for instance would be Charlie Oscar Oscar kilo India Echo Sierra.
Next is military time.
A lot of people get pretty confused by military time, but it's actually pretty simple. Instead of going back to 1 after noon, they go to 13. They do this so that if they have orders to report at 7, they don't get confused if it's AM or PM. The best way to figure out what time it's supposed to be is to subtract 12 from it. So 1600 is 4:00. 2100 is 9:00. I'll list it all below and how to properly say it.
1:00 am - 0100 (zero one hundred)
2:00 - 0200
3:00 - 0300
4:00 - 0400
5:00 - 0500
6:00 - 0600
7:00 - 0700
8:00 - 0800
9:00 - 0900
10:00 - 1000 (ten hundred)
11:00 - 1100
12:00 - 1200
1:00 pm - 1300 (thirteen hundred)
2:00 - 1400
3:00 - 1500
4:00 - 1600
5:00 - 1700
6:00 - 1800
7:00 - 1900
8:00 - 2000 (twenty hundred)
9:00 - 2100
10:00 - 2200
11:00 - 2300
12:00 - 2400 or 0000 (zero hundred)

MOS: military occupational specialty (what your job is) (ex. 91 Bravo {91B} is a wheeled vehicle mechanic)(my mos)
PT: Physical training
ACU: army combat uniform. This is the camo one that people are use to seeing. There's another uniform for pt, but they're just called pt's
PC: patrol cap, it's the hat enlisted men and women wear. Can't be worn inside
