He had actually only gotten food for him and the girl who's name I discovered to be Emmalyn.

"Are you serious?!" I exclaimed, and he shot me a glare that could kill. "Yes. If you want food go out and get it. Not my issue." Was all he said before getting back to roasting the mutton he had sliced off of a dead sheep.

Emmalyn shrugged at me, making me growl and turn to walk out. "I swear you're just some moody teenager stuck in a grown man's body." I froze as a dagger flew right past my ear and stuck to the cave wall a few steps in front of me. I whipped around, and his arm was still in the release position.

"Next time I won't miss. Watch your mouth." He growled, making Emmalyn squeak. I snottily mouthed what he said as I left the cave, annoyed beyond belief at this guy.

When I found myself at a nearby river, I slumped against a tree and groaned. "Why did I agree to this..? I could've just killed him and been over with it." Such a thought almost seemed relieving in a sense, and I smirked. "In fact, I'll just go do that right now-"

"No!"

I gasped at the sudden voice and immediately whipped a dagger in a random direction. I couldn't understand where it had come from because all I could tell was that it came from... everywhere.

Scrambling for my next dagger, I whipped my head around in all directions, not comprehending what had just happened.

It was quiet save for my heavy breathing, and I still couldn't understand how I could've heard that but at the same time not.

"Oh Shad... I'm really losing it..." I growled at myself before sheathing my blade and walking towards the area where I threw the other one.

The whole ordeal made me feel that trying to kill someone like Zane was way over my head. I agreed to this, so I have to see it through.

A chicken clucked from nearby, stirring me out of my thoughts. I remembered my original objective to get food and slowly grabbed an arrow from my bag.

My semi-blurry and partially cross eyed vision was never helpful in these situations, but I had gotten used to shooting this way through practice. I placed the arrow in the bow string before pulling back.

I let go of the weapon and watched as it flew through the air, silent but sure, and pierced right through the animal's eye.

"You're back early." Zane commented as I walked in, dead chicken in hand. "Miss me?" I asked, to which he didn't even look at me as he replied with, "Not particularly, no."

After rolling my eyes at his annoying attitude, I plopped right next to him and stabbed my sword through the chicken's torso before holding the handle. "So what's this special thing you snatched from the devil himself?" I asked, and once again, he didn't even give me a glance before responding, "That sparkly thing on the wall." He pointed to a frame as he spoke, and I saw a shard of sorts. It was so bright, I wondered if it even needed light to glimmer the way it did.

"That looks nice. How'd you know it was important to him?" I asked, plucking feathers off of the chicken.

He shrugged. "I don't know. It might've been the extreme surplus of shadow knights he sent after me, or him yelling about how if I escaped with it everyone would be executed. But you know, it's just a maybe." He deadpanned.
