It's about six in the afternoon and the suns rays have already left their long shadows on the ground. The street is empty, besides two ten-year-old girls, running around in their dirty sundresses. "Kaylee! The monster is after us!" One of them with dark hair thrown into a messy ponytail yells after the other, her glasses perched at the end of her button nose, threatening to fall off as she tottered after her friend.
"Ahhh!" Kaylee screamed while the one with dark hair chased her down the road. "Ellie! Ellie! Stop! I'm gonna fall!" The girls burst into a fit of giggles as Kaylee mimed falling, her mouth agape like a fish.
"Hold on," Ellie said, swiping the flyaways off her sweaty forehead and sitting down on the rough gravel.
"What's the time?"
"Almost six, my moms going to be so angry if I'm not home before half past!"
"Oh..." Kaylee stared down at her lap, letting her dirty blonde hair fall into her face, when she looked up again the sun had shifted its position. Shining right in the girls faces.
Ellie suddenly turned to Kaylee with a curious expression on her young face. "Do you think we're going to be friends forever?"
"I hope so," Kaylee said, returning the look with a toothy grin of her own.
"Yeah, me too!"
Kaylee's small face fell and she took a deep breathe, her little body shaking as she spoke. "Ellie...I have to tell you something, you have to promise not to tell anyone, though,"
"I promise." Ellie said almost immediately.
Tears suddenly sprung in Kaylee's eyes.
"My foster mom and dad ke-
Voices suddenly started swimming in and out of my head.
"Ell...oka...help..."
"How...ELLI..."
My eyes fly open and immediately close when the white light shines straight into my eyes.
"Ellie! Oh, my gosh! You're okay!" Scar says as she envelopes me in a huge hug.
I blink my eyes rapidly in the bright sunlight until my eyes adjust, scanning over Scar, Rowan, Liv, Percy-wait Percy?
And not just him, another two boys were standing over me.
Well, this is a little weird...
I turned around to Liv. "What...what happened?" I asked groggily.
"Scar and you, well, you guys went really far out and when I tried to call you two to come say hi to Percy, I saw you and her really, really far away."
"That's where I come in!"Scar says proudly.
Percy turns back to me as he speaks. "Yeah, this young lady had to drag you all the way back to the shore."
Scar blushes at this and turns away. I could have sworn I saw Percy blush, too.
"And, uh, not to be rude or anything, but who are you guys?"
The one standing closest to me with the dark brown hair speaks first.
"Bentley. Lovely meeting you." He gently kisses my hand in a joking manner and throws a wink to me. Out of the corner of my eye I see Percy roll his eyes.
Bentley runs his hand through his curly hair, fixing me with his brown eyes, a half smile growing on his lips. He looks about my age, a few years older, maybe.
"I'm Marco, you must be Ellie?" I swiftly turn my head and nod to him, he smiles, emphasizing the freckles dotting his face. He has a nice smile, I must admit...
Marco sticks his hand out to help me up and the others follow suite, getting up, too.
"Okay, ladies," Liv starts packing up as she speaks, immediately the boys rush to help her.
What is with guys and wanting to be so helpful all the time?
"It's been lovely, but we have a sleepover to attend and I would like to get this sand out of my bag."
Liv beams at the boys as they help us carry everything to the car. Marco's short black hair swishing as he talks animatedly to Percy.
Bentley walks a little in front of us. My eyes watching the muscles in his back work.
"You know, it's not nice to make men do all the work." He jests over his shoulder, his gaze landing on me. He totally knew I was checking him out. Rowan rolls her eyes at him.
"Don't forget," she begins. "You guys picked up our stuff faster than hyenas on a carcass."
Now Bentley rolls his eyes. Liv smiles. "Careful, don't roll your eyes too far into your head. You might see your brain."
Scar whispers quietly to me, "What brain?" And I burst into giggles, earning a few funny looks from Rowan and Liv.
When we reach Rowan's car the boys still insist on helping us put everything in.
Scar leans out the window to speak to the boys. "We don't need knights in shining armour, you know?"
"But, isn't it nice not to carry all that stuff?" Percy answers back.
As he does, Roman starts the car and peels out of the parking lot, to Liv's house.
Hey guys!
Bit of a long wait since the last chapter, but at least I finished this one!
