Chapter Thirteen

Andy's P.O.V

It was the day of the flight back to America. Katie's friend Sophie came with us to the airport because she wanted to say her goodbyes to Katie. Kellin and I had met Sophie the day before and she seemed very nice. While we had our little party that night I noticed Katie kept looking at me and smiling sweetly, as though lost in some sort of dream. I smiled back at her and glanced over at her too when I didn't think she'd notice. I was truly beginning to fall in love with her that night, but I just couldn't bring myself to tell her. Not yet anyway.

Katie and Sophie had got a little teary when saying their farewells, but they knew it would not be the last time they saw each other. When Sophie left and we got on our plane I gave Katie a sympathetic hug, seeing in her face that she was still a little sad. She quickly gained enthusiasm and excitement about leaving as we got further into the flight though.

The plane was quite small, and Kellin, Katie and I took up a whole row of seats in it. Katie was sat in the middle of us, while I was sat by the window and Kellin was sat on the outside of the row of seats. Kellin said he was probably going to listen to music for most of the flight. After a few hours Katie decided to take a couple pills to help her sleep since she felt tired and there was still a long while left until the flight would be over.

"Andy, look at the sky!" Katie exclaimed, pointing out the window at the orange and peach pink sunset. "I always think that when the sun sets it's the best part of the day because the colours are so pretty and it's all romantic. Isn't it the most beautiful thing you've ever seen?"

"Not quite the most beautiful thing I've seen, but the colours are pretty, you're right" I reply, chuckling at her overexcitement. I took a mental note that Katie had a thing for sunsets as I thought that the info may come in handy in the future.

"Well, what is the most beautiful thing you've ever seen? It couldn't possibly be much more beautiful than that sky, surely" Katie said, dreamily, still gazing out the window.

"You" I said honestly, knowing it was kinda cheesy.

"What about me?" Katie asked, thinking I'd changed the subject or something.

"You're the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."

"Andy, I think you need to get your eyes tested" she said looking at me in an unconvinced way. But when I saw her eyes, I could see that it'd made her really happy and her mouth curved upwards rapidly. She wrapped her arms around me and rested her head on my shoulder in gratitude to my compliment. Once she'd let go, and for the next few minutes after, we lacked conversation. I had found myself lost for things to say. I don't know how but Katie had made me speechless.

Luckily Katie began to speak. She said "I am so excited, I can't believe it! I'm just so glad I got away from... from Kyle."

"Me too. He didn't deserve you, Katie, but you're safe now, that's the main thing" I replied, trying to make her feel better about it all. But deep down I knew that Kyle had left scars on her mind, and that those scars would fade but would never truly leave her.

"Yeah, being safe is definitely something I'm looking forward to! While I was with him, it was like I'd forgotten what 'safe' meant. I was scared all the time. He's the reason I have no confidence in myself, since he'd tell me every day about how ugly I was or how worthless I was or whatever. He just made me feel like I wasn't good enough for anyone, you know what I mean?" Katie said, beginning to yawn and rub her eyes.

I looked out the window at the sunset again while I said "You're good enough for men 10 times as good as me. You deserve the best things life can offer you, and the best guy too." But when my eyes returned to Katie she had fallen asleep. The sleep pills had taken their effect on her. The last bit of light from the setting sun was glowing on her gorgeous face. And right then was the moment I properly realised... I was madly in love with Katie Richards.
