Chapter One

I was running late, as usual. I was supposed to be meeting Sophie, my best friend in town 5 minutes ago, but here I was at home, still getting ready. I always felt bad turning up late to meet Sophie, especially since she’s one of those people who are ALWAYS perfect and on time. But she never minded. She was used to it anyway. We’d been close friends since we were 9 and 12 years on, here we were, still friends.

Why do I always have to ignore my alarm clock? Over the years it’s become a bad habit of mine, but sleep is one of my favourite things. I frantically searched through my wardrobe for an acceptable outfit and shoved it on. I then ran round the house like a headless chicken, brushing my teeth and hair, doing my makeup and finding my purse. Without forgetting to spray myself with perfume and deodorant until I sneezed. (I’ve always been very self-conscious about how I smell).

I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. ‘Probably Sophie’, I thought.

Sophie: C’mon Katie, we need some serious girly catch-up time! x

I chuckled to myself and replied with: Sorry Soph, just leaving the house now. I’m sure you can last without me for the next 5 minutes. Besides, I saw you 2 days ago. See you in a bit x

I hopped in the car and fumbled around in my bag. I’d left the bloody keys in the house again. I needed to learn to put them in my bag before I left. I rushed back into the house again and returned to the car with my keys. I’d had 3 driving tests and failed the first 2. Luckily, I’d passed on the third one, but only just. You can tell what that says about my driving.

Finally, I drove off and within 5 minutes I’d arrived in the car park. As I’d suspected, Sophie was stood by the entrance to the car park, looking beautiful and glamorous as always. I parked the car and rushed over to her.

She looked at me with a very serious expression (which worried me), flicked her long brown hair and said “You lied to me.”

“What? I’m so sorry, when?” I said, panic stricken. I couldn’t really remember ever lying to her though. I’d hate if there was anything I’d done to upset her. Losing her would be like losing part of me.

“You said you’d be 5 minutes, but you were 6!” she joked and then laughed as she saw me get all flustered.

“Oh, haha. Yeah, sorry, I left the keys in the house again which probably added another minute.” I said, relieved. You have probably worked out that I get worried very easily.

“Haha, what am I going to do with you sweetie?”

I shrugged and said “Oh, stop it, you sound like my mum or something.”

“So where first?” Sophie said excitedly. We were eager shoppers.

“Hmm, I don’t mind. Maybe Drift?” Drift was one of my favourite shops, it was filled with CDs, vinyl records, tapes and even band-merch! It had all the best music in it too, and today I was hoping to find another Black Veil Brides or Sleeping With Sirens t-shirt (either would do, as I was obsessed with both bands). I didn’t need any more albums, as I’d already bought every album that both bands had ever released.

“Haha, you and your music fanatics” Sophie said shaking her head. “Alright Katie, let’s go and get this over with.”

The one thing me and Sophie didn’t see eye to eye about was music, but that didn’t bother me at all. She liked her music and I liked mine, that didn’t change anything about our friendship, thankfully. Sophie never judged me about my music either, unlike some people.

As we walked we chatted about random girly things as we always did, for example where Sophie had bought her earrings, and what we’d been getting up to when we weren’t at work. Things like that. As we neared Drift I practically ran to the door before I furiously searched the shop for band-merch. Before Sophie had even caught up with me I’d already found a Black Veil Brides and Sleeping With Sirens t-shirt. I needed them. Desperately.

“Wow Katie, you’re quick aren’t you? Luckily for me” Sophie said with a wink once she’d entered Drift.

“Yes my dear, for when one is passionate about something, one tends to speed up in one’s search for that something” I replied in my ‘posh’ voice, and we burst into fits of giggles. I sounded stupid when I tried to be posh, we both knew that.   I went to the checkout and bought the t-shirts and had around £10 left over afterwards; enough to buy me and Sophie a hot-chocolate later.

As soon as we left, Sophie grabbed me by the wrist and dragged me to River Island, her favourite shop. I didn’t mind, I liked it there too. Sophie and I had the exact same viewpoints on fashion, and we liked all the same clothes and jewellery (excluding all my band clothing). If there was one person I loved shopping with, it was Sophie.

The next hour or so was spent rushing round shops and watching Sophie speedily grab items of clothing and buy them before the blink of an eye. I loved her passion for fashion, but I worried about how she always splashed all her cash out on clothes and not some more important things. Somehow she always managed to pay her bills and buy food and all that stuff. Maybe she was just rich despite the amount of things she bought.

Eventually even Sophie got tired of rushing around, so we sat in a café and I offered to buy her a hot-chocolate.

“Oh, I’m alright thanks Kat, I’m on a diet. Need to watch my weight you know” she said.

I stared at her with an open mouth in disbelief. “What the bloody hell Soph? You don’t need to lose weight, look at you! You’re perfect! I’m not being funny, but if you lose any more weight there’ll be nothing left of you!”

“Aw, thank you Katie, I appreciate that. But I know you’re just saying that because we’re best friends.”

I said it because I genuinely meant it. I hated that she was worried about her weight, especially since everyone, including me, thought she was so flawless and beautiful. I’d swap looks with her any day.

“No, I honestly meant it Sophie! If I was a stranger I’d feel the same way, it has nothing to do with how close we are. There’s no convincing you is there?”

“Nope” she said smugly, and we sat together talking for a while as I sipped my hot-chocolate. After about 15 minutes Sophie said “Sorry Katie, I think I’d better go. Mark’s quite ill and I feel bad leaving him alone.” Mark was Katie’s boyfriend.

“Okay, no problem, I can understand that. Let him know I hope he’ll be okay” I replied with a smile. I was fine with it, just completely dreading going home.

“Thanks darling, I’ll see you really soon okay? Well actually, you don’t have a choice” Sophie said, looking apologetic. And we hugged really cheesily, as if we weren’t going to see each other for months. But that’s how we always hugged. Then she was gone and I was left alone in the café. My phone vibrated so I checked my phone. Ugh, a text from Kyle (my boyfriend). I rolled my eyes and read the message.

Kyle: Where the hell are you? Get home right now you bitch.

Let’s just say Kyle was the type to get angry way too easily. And to be perfectly honest, I was terrified of him, but I never let him know that. He was the reason I was dreading going home.

Me: Sorry hun, I’m in town right now. I’ll be back in a little while okay? x

Kyle: Well hurry up, you slut, or you’ll regret it.

I sighed and put my phone in my bag. Living with Kyle was horrible, but I had to put up with it because any attempt I’d previously made to end things with him resulted in several bruises. But then again, everything I did resulted in some sort of punishment. I felt so trapped and alone, and no one knew what things were like with him except me. I guess that was because I didn’t want to complain or moan to anyone. I’d just have to push on through. It’s not like it was the end of the world.

I tidied up the table me and Sophie had been sat on and left the café. I started heading towards the car park and was nearly there when I heard a voice behind me say “Excuse me, did you drop your phone?”

The person was American and his voice was very deep. I could have sworn I recognised that voice…

Hey guys, sorry if it's a bit boring, I guess I just wanted to set the scene. Also, I doubt that this is accurate, but hey, this is fiction after all. This is my first fan-fiction I've written, so I hope you guys enjoy! :)
