Chapter Seventeen

Katie’s P.O.V

My birthday had arrived. I wasn’t particularly excited, it wasn’t anything special. Besides, I doubted that Andy or Kellin had remembered. When I awoke I wandered into Andy’s room to say good morning, but he wasn’t in there. In fact, he wasn’t anywhere upstairs, so I went downstairs. I walked into the living room and there sat Andy waiting for me.

“Happy birthday Katie!” he said, rushing over to hug me.

“Thank you! You remembered!”

“Of course I did. I bought you a little something” he said, heading over to the kitchen and returning with two beautifully wrapped gifts, one quite large, the other smallish.

“Oh my god, you didn’t have to do that!” I cried, hugging Andy tightly.

“Oh yes I did. Open them, beautiful” he replied, smiling broadly.

I unwrapped the smallest one first, as I always liked to save the bigger presents for last as a kid. Under the paper was a fancy box, which I took the lid off to reveal a gorgeous necklace, with a gold chain and a silver feather charm. I almost cried as I wrapped it around my neck and repeatedly thanked Andy.

“Open the other one!” Andy whined.

“Fine, ya big baby!” I replied tearing the paper off the large cuboid shaped present. I gasped at what I saw. It was the amazing keyboard I saw at the music store that I was desperate for! No wonder it wasn’t there when I had gone to work the previous day!

“Oh my giddy god! Andy, you didn’t!”

“I think you’ll find I did.”

“I can’t believe it...” I said, lost for words.

“Go on, plug it in! I wanna hear you play!” Andy said, nudging me towards the electric socket in the wall. I obediently plugged in the keyboard, switched it on and began to play the chords to Done For You by Black Veil Brides and I sang the words quietly.

“The best things in life come with a price. The star that burned so bright faded the fastest. You’ll always feel it’s right, even when we end the fight. Welcome home, home tonight.”

Then Andy sat next to me by the keyboard as I continued to play, and together we sang. “Singing ohh, ohh. Welcome home tonight. Ohhh ohh, tonight. Words they don’t know how to make amends, and all they do is push you to the edge but it’s not wasted. It’s all done for you, it’s all done for you. It’s all done for you, it’s all done for you. Oh, ohh.”

“That was amazing Katie” Andy said, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

“Thank you.”

“You should really get a career in music.”

“Nah, I’m fine just doing it in my spare time for my own pleasure” I replied, feeling flattered by his compliments nonetheless.

“Fair enough. So, what do you want to do today on your BIRTHDAY?” Andy said, yelling at the word “birthday”.

“I think I’d quite like to get a lip piercing done” I answered.

“Sounds awesome! You’d look great with a lip ring” said Andy. “Then that’s what we’ll do.”

*skipping to after getting lip pierced*

“Does it still hurt?” Andy asked.

“Only a little” I replied, looking at my lip in the mirror. I was pretty pleased with my latest piercing addition.

“It looks fucking fantastic” Andy said.

“Thanks, glad you think so. I swear to god, this has been the best birthday I’ve had in years.”

“That’s nice to hear.”

The doorbell suddenly rang, making us both jump. I rushed over to the door, and swung it open and before I could see who it was I was being hugged tightly.

“Happy birthday Katie!” Kellin yelled.

“Thank you, but watch it, that’s my ear you just shouted into” I replied, laughing. “You remembered too!”

“Yeah, course I remembered Katie! And nice lip ring by the way” Kellin said, pulling away from the hug. I led him back to the living room and he greeted Andy cheerfully. We all sat down and Kellin held a gift out to me and said “For you!”

“Thank you! You shouldn’t have” I replied. I tore off the paper to see a beautiful anklet and a photo in a nice looking frame. The photo was of Andy, Kellin and I the day we met back in England. I smiled so wide my cheeks were beginning to hurt, and hugged Kellin as thanks. I put on the anklet, put the photo on my bedside table, and came back down to hang with the guys. They had a can of beer in their hands and Andy reached out to pass me one which I gladly accepted. I turned on some music and we chatted and danced while drinking can after can of beer, partying the afternoon away.

It wasn’t long before we were beginning to stumble around and say weird things and laugh at everything anyone said. Andy and I were shamelessly all over each other. Kellin however, seemed even drunker than me and Andy. At one point he started getting emotional and tearful so I turned off the music and tried to comfort him in my drunken state. Andy patted him on the back and said “Don’t worry man, you’re just drunk”.

“Don’t you touch me!” Kellin suddenly yelled angrily, making us both jump and take a step away.

“Wh-what?” Andy asked, looking slightly shocked.

“How can you do this to me? I bet you don’t even know what you’ve done, do you?” Kellin shouted again.

“Honestly, I don’t have a clue what I’ve done” Andy replied.

“You took away the love of my life from me, you fucking dickhead. We both know Katie loves me anyway” Kellin said, his speech beginning to slur.

“Come on now, Kellin. You wouldn’t be saying any of this if you were sober” I said, smiling at him warmly.

“I meant every word of it! I love you Katie! And you love me too, not that dickhead who stole you from me!” Kellin shouted in my face.

“B-but…”

“I think you need to take a nap Kellin” Andy said, a concerned look on his face.

“Yeah you’re right. Night guys! Don’t let the bed bugs bight!” Kellin replied cheerfully as he flopped onto the couch. Wow, he could sure go from party animal to drunken weirdo pretty quickly.

“Haha, yikes. I doubt he meant any of that, he just needs some sobering up” I said to Andy.

Andy seemed to be having other thoughts though, and looked worried. “I think Kellin did mean it.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, I think he does love you” Andy replied. “Anyway, I’m gonna go to bed and get an early night.” He hugged me even longer than normal and trudged up the stairs to bed. I guess it must have felt pretty bad knowing that one of your closest friends is in love with your girlfriend. Maybe Andy even worried that I did love Kellin back, which I honestly didn’t. I loved Andy, madly, although he didn’t know it as I’d never said it and neither had he. He also probably felt bad that he’d clearly caused Kellin hurt by being with me, but it wasn’t really Andy’s fault; he wasn’t to know. I lay down on the sofa opposite Kellin and drifted slowly into an uneasy sleep.
