I stared mouth agape at the creature before me. Paul was a wolf…..a freaking big wolf at that. I thought back to the legends that my parents told me when I was little how we were descendants from wolves…… I gulped the legends must be true.
Wolf Paul let out a whine and laid down on the forest near me I just stared at him and he let out another whine and shifted a little closer to me. I took a step back in fear. That’s when wolf Paul turned and looked into my eyes…..they were a glowing green just like Paul’s…..exactly like Paul’s. “It’s really you,” I whispered shakily.
The wolf almost smiled at me and stepped forward once again in encouragement. He leaned his head down taking slow steps toward me as if not to scare me. I took a step back once again as he took a few steps forward. He whined and looked at me again as if to say, I would never hurt you. He took a few more steps forward and this time I didn’t move back. I shakily raised my hand a little as if to pet the big wolf.
Wolf Paul took the last step forward and brought his head underneath my hand. I gulped his fur was so soft. I shakily started to pet his head and scratch behind his ears slowly becoming more comfortable. Wolf Paul was eating it up though moving his head and practically purring if a wolf could purr. “G-good boy,” I whispered shakily and wolf Paul let out something that sounded like a wheeze that I think was supposed to be a laugh.
Then he licked my entire face with his tongue which I didn’t take in stride quite as much. “PAUL! I don’t know where your filthy tongue has been! That’s disgusting!” I screamed at him unhappily and he simply rolled onto his back wheezing then gave me a look that so said, “I’m sexy and I know it.” I rolled my eyes at him as he rolled around on the ground leaves attaching to his beautiful silver coat. “Now look at what your doing, you’re getting your pretty fur all disgusting with leaves and dirt,” I said annoyed.
In response to that he stood up and licked my face again, I huffed while he just gave me a wolfy grin before running grabbing his shorts in his mouth.
A few moments later a human Paul came back grinning from ear to ear, and I just frowned at him, “I always knew you were a dog,” was my smart reply.
He laughed running up to me before pulling me into a tight hug as if scared I’d push him away. Paul wouldn’t hurt me, he had proved that to me time and time again. I shared my story with him and he hadn’t run, I couldn’t run when he shared his with me. “Thank you for not running,” he whispered in my ear.
“You didn’t run from me when I told you my story, I wasn’t going to run from you,” I told him simply.
He grinned at me seeming to like my response. He then pulled me down on to the forest floor before pulling me into his lap, which I tried to pull myself onto the ground, but he wasn’t having that, so I obliged sulking a bit. “I’m sure you’ve heard the legends?” he asked me.
“Yeah, I did grow up here,” I said a bit sarcastically.
“Touché,” he teased.
I smirked at him and he just grinned at me looking like he had won the lottery. “Well they are real,” he told me and I gave him a look that so said no shit Sherlock.
“I haven’t exactly explained this before, give me a break,” he whined pouting.
“Sorry, why don’t you start from when you shifted huh?” I asked.
“That was why I was gone for two weeks, the shift is fueled by anger, and I had gotten really angry at my dad…..and I ran out of the house and shifted…..it was scariest moment of my life, one minute I’m fuming at my dad next I’m standing on four paws with a snout in the middle of the forest…..” he whispered.
“Wow,” I whispered.
“Sam had already shifted, and wolves share a pack mind as their way of communication, he found me and helped me. Jared shifted three days later. I’ve always had a lot of anger problems, so obviously it took me a bit longer to get back to school. I don’t think anyone wanted me to shift into a gigantic wolf in the middle of class. I had to distance myself from all my friends, and it wasn’t a fun experience,” he told me.
“I’m sorry, that must have been tough, and then the bet probably didn’t make it easier on you,” I whispered apologetically.
He rolled his eyes at me, “We discussed this Ali I didn’t care about the bet, I used it to get to know you,” he told me.
“But why? Why were you allowed to spend time with me and not any of your other friends?” I asked him.
“That’s a story for another time, okay?” he asked me.
I frowned, so there was a reason, he just didn’t want to tell me yet. “Anyways, the thing that triggers the shift is the cold ones…..” he said nervously.
I stiffened remembering the legends of the cold ones…..vampires….. “There’s a vampire around here?” I whispered terrified.
“The Cullens…..” he whispered.
My eyes widened, “But he’s a doctor!” I shouted at him.
“They don’t feed on humans they feed only on animals, that’s why they have gold eyes, we have a treaty with them, they aren’t allowed on our land, and we don’t bother them,” he said simply.
I shivered, then froze, “Wait, gold eyes…..does that mean….” I whispered horrified.
“Yes, Ali, I’m sorry,” he whispered unable to look at me.
I was silent, “He got killed by a vampire didn’t he?” I whispered.
“That or…..” he trailed off unsurely.
“Or what?” I asked unable to bear the thought of my Josh having been tortured by a vampire.
“Or…..got changed into one…..” he whispered.
I froze, James said he saw him with red eyes…..that he said he had to wait till he could control himself…..he didn’t want to hurt us…… “He’s a vampire,” I whispered horrified.
Paul tightened his hold on me, “We don’t know that,” he replied unsurely. I could tell by the tone in his voice that’s what he thought happened.
“But he could be good like the Cullens….even if he’s bad now…..we could bring him to the Cullens and they could help him, he’s a good person, Paul,” I said hopefully.
“Maybe,” he whispered sadly brushing a curl behind my ear.
“We have to go find him, he’s in Seattle, he wants to see me,” I told him standing up about to walk to Seattle.
“Ali, you don’t even know if he’s dangerous or not!” he snapped at me.
I stared shocked at Paul, he never snapped at me, “He’s still my Josh,” I whispered.
Paul looked away, “I’m coming with you, that way I can keep you safe,” he told me.
I nodded agreeing, my mind racing with thoughts that Josh was alive, that maybe just maybe he was coming back for me…..just like he promised.
