Maverick was slightly more energetic than he had been the next morning. The light in his eyes that had almost completely disappeared, had returned, even if just a little.
With the new hint, they began looking for castles around evergreen wooded areas. Maverick pulled at his hair," Ugh! We're getting nowhere!" He ran a hand down his face and rubbed his temples. Grayson pat his back," We're closer than we were before. Don't give up hope Mav."
The wolf nodded and stood, heading into the kitchen. He set a kettle of water on the stove to heat up for tea. While he waited for it to heat up, he went and fixed his mug. "Do either of you want coffee or tea?!" He yelled into the living room. "I'll take coffee!" Maverick moved towards the coffee pot and quickly set it up.
He fixed his tea and by the time he was done, the coffee was ready. He fixed a cup for Corbin and added three sugars and a splash of milk. Mav handed Corbin his cup and sat next to Grayson. "Are we any closer?" He took a sip from his mug. Grayson gave a chuckle," Not any closer than when you asked about ten minutes ago." Maverick pouted.
Maverick was feeling restless so he decided to go for a run. He left his clothes behind a tree and shifted into his wolf form for the first time since Silas had been taken. He stretched, feeling the soft dirt between his toes. Mav felt a little better and began trotting forward, taking deep breathes of the fresh forest air as he did so.
Mav. Yes? Take your time and nap in the clearing if you want to. Corbin and I will keep an eye out for any information. Thanks Gray, I'll think about it. He began running, letting the wind rustle his fur and his feet carry him where they wanted to go.
After awhile he stopped and found himself in his favorite spot in the forest. A clearing that had a giant rock in the middle. The rock was mostly flat and the perfect place to sunbathe. Before spending so much time with Silas after finding his mate, he would come here often to get away from it all for awhile.
So that's what he did. Mav leaped on top of the rock and did a circle before laying down. The sun's rays hit just the right places and he felt his eyes start to shut sleepily. He gave a short yawn before letting sleep take over, not noticing the eyes that watched him from the dark shadows of the overgrown treetops.
He awoke awhile later, the sound of heavy footfalls waking him. Mav opened his eyes to find Grayson in his wolf form walking over. Anything? Grayson shook his head. Sorry. Nothing yet. It was getting late so I came to get you. Maverick nodded before gathering his legs underneath himself, heaving his sleek and muscle clad body off the rock. He jumped down and yawned while stretching. Glad to see you slept well. Yeah. Let's go on and head back.
The pair started making their way back to the pack house. Mav sensed eyes on him but figured they were just Grayson's who was walking slightly behind him out of respect.
Once back at the house, the two split for a moment to go behind their own trees and retrieve their clothing. Mav shifted back and pulled on the sweatpants and t-shirt that he had been formerly wearing prior to going for a run. "Mav?" The male turned around to face his friend, an eyebrow raised in questioning. "Be careful, yeah?" He looked at his best friend, questioning why he would say such a thing.
Before he could ask why he said that, the flapping of wings sounded. Mav quickly pinpointed where it was coming from and turned towards it. It was the owl from before, a little ruffled in appearance, but it was the one and the same. Another letter was fastened to its leg.
Maverick held out his arm, allowing the bird to land. He pet its head and took the letter from its leg. The owl moved to his shoulder, letting the wolf open the letter to read it. The smell of his mate met his nose and he barely managed to stop himself from tearing the paper open. Once he did, his heart leaped.
Mav,
I know you are worried sick about me. I pray this letter gets to you. If you guys have guessed, it was my father who took me. Corbin should have figured it out. I know you have been looking for me because that's who you are and that's what I would have done if it where you in my place. I'm sorry but I do not have much time so I will be brief.
My father wants me to use my power to control the minds of all vampires, bend them to his will. He wants to cause a war and upset the peace treaties between all monsters and beings. I've been refusing and as a result he has been torturing me.
Maverick's blood boiled.
I don't know how much longer I can stand it Mav. It hurts. He's been using Vervain. The castle is somewhere close to the sea. I can smell it in the air and hear its waves against rocks. There are monsters and beings in the woods Mav, please be careful. And save me. I don't know how much longer I can take it.
~Si
Without much of a warning, Maverick took off for the house. The owl flapped its wings to catch its balance, latching into his shoulder and drawing blood. The wolf didn't care. He had been given a clue. And he would stop at nothing to find his mate, even if it killed him.
