Some people say that it is impossible to write about love if one has never been in love. In certain regards that is true, however if you allow yourself to open your heart and emotions to the possibility of love you will see that there are a multitude of possibilities that you were unaware of. There are several forms of love that you can choose to write about. It is important that you choose a form before you begin writing your story, especially if it is between your two main characters and will come to play a vital role in how your audience comes to know your characters.
Depending on whichever form of love you choose: puppy love, unrequited love, star crossed love, soulmate love, etc. It all has to flow together. There has to be some coherency to the story and flow in such a way that it will progress and still make sense to you and your readers.
Love can be conveyed as cheesy, however for those of you reading this whom have never been in love or have never considered love, I only have one thing to say. Love is raw. Since it is raw it will not be smooth, it will not be polished or practiced. Your characters will by inching along with uncertainty just as you have or eventually will. Love isn't a masterpiece, what makes it into a masterpiece is the process or the journey it took to get there.
There is a great misconception about love being perfect or that when you meet that special one that you will simply live happily ever after. Your characters will not be perfect and neither will be their relationships. Conflict will remain present in their lives whether or not it remains minor is entirely up to you, but be conscious of what will appear believable and genuine before you write something that will feel awkward and disconnected from the world you have created.
The best advice that I can give about writing love is to allow yourself to write about your own fantasies for love. I'm not saying that you have to use your fantasies directly, but you can use them as a jumping off point and to inspire you to create something beautiful for your characters.
If you have any questions, or anything in particular that you would like advice on please leave a comment and I will get to it as soon as I can. Thank you for reading.
