Chapter 1:

“LUCY MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING FOR THE FLIGHT!” my mom calls from the kitchen downstairs. I double-check my luggage, making sure I have all my clothes, money and paperwork I’ll need for my trip to California.

As I walk over to my dresser, I notice the picture of my best friend, Annabelle, and I in our costumes from the spring musical, which ended last week, the last week of May (Its June 5). It was the last picture we got with each other before the accident.

Annabelle Mae Todd killed herself on June 2nd, 2014. My best friend left me forever, 3 days ago. She was struggling with depression and lost the battle. It was the worst day of my life. We were hanging out that morning, because school ended the day before. Around noon she told me that she didn’t feel well, so I went home to give her space. Later that night, around 9, she left me a message when I was in the shower. It said, “Lucy, I love you. You’re my best friend and everything you’ve done means so much to me. Just remember, I love you.”

I got the call at 9:57 that night. I screamed to my mom and we sped to the hospital. It was too late. Annabelle overdosed on a bottle of sleeping pills. She was declared dead at 10:04. It was the worst night of my life.

Annabelle’s death is the reason I’m going to California. After her funeral, my parents decided it would be best if I spent the summer with my uncle and his girlfriend in LA. They said it would be best if I got away from all the drama here, and relaxed in a new place with new opportunities.

After the moment of sadness, I grab the photograph and stuff it in the last bit of space in my small suitcase. I take one long glance in the mirror. I look like a wreck. Ever since that day, I’ve looked like wreck. My hair is in a messy bun, but not those pretty messy buns in all those Tumblr fan fictions. It’s not beautiful flowing blonde hair; it’s curly, brown and boring. It’s an actual rat nest just sitting upon my head.

I’m in a grey sweatshirt and sweatpants. I was too lazy to put contacts in, so I’m currently wearing my glasses. I need to get my eyebrows done, but I could care less right now. I sigh loudly, and then drag all my crap downstairs to the front door.

I don’t have my license yet, so my parents and little brother drive me to the airport. My older brother left for his senior week two weeks ago, so I won’t see him until the end of the summer. My parents said that they would come up later in the summer for a week to visit, depending on how well my little brother does in baseball.

We arrive at the terminal. Time to say my goodbyes.
