There was a girl on the soccer field. She had straw-straight brown hair and eyes, as ordinary as any other player. But there was something different about her. Maybe it was the way she streaked past the other players, the ball captured in her feet, far ahead of the other kids and heading toward the goal on the opposite side of the field. Maybe it was the way her friends cheered for her in the bleachers.
Or the way her brother and sister were half-raised out of their seats, holding up their paper cups in anticipation. The boy with the black hair and his little brother, sitting beside him, cheered loudly, but not as loudly as the boy with freckles.
Two adults in the stands egged her on more than any other parents, yelling encouragement as she barged past defenders and swept her leg at the ball, making contact with a terrific thump, watching it fly through the air, past the goalie’s fingers…
And into the net.
