"Welcome to your first day!" Mrs. Langston said, clapping her hands in excitement. I smiled politely.
"It's great to be here." I told her, keeping the smile plastered across my face.
"You don't have to smile like that, you know." Mason whispered in my ear, making me jump. I turned to glare at him, and I saw that his lips were turned up into an evil smirk. I rolled my eyes and returned my attention to Mrs. Langston.
"Today, John has to work, so he won't be home until dinner. I'm going to play some bingo with a few friends. How about you and Mason go to the mall for a little while?" She suggested. I looked over at Mason and made a disgusted face. I was joking, of course. He knew I was kidding, and he played along by sticking his tongue out at me. I laughed and so did he.
"Yes, Mrs. Langston. I'll make sure he doesn't get into any trouble." I promised, smirking.
"Excuse me? But you're probably the one that'll get us in trouble." Mason retorted. I spun around to glare at him.
"Am not!"
"Are to!"
"Am not!"
"Are to!"
"Enough you two!" Mrs. Langston said, breaking us up.
"Am not." I whispered, smirking and crossing my arms. He rolled his eyes, as a small smile tugged at his lips.
"Now I'm going to need a ride to bingo, and then you two can have the car." Mrs. Langston said. I nodded in agreement.
"I'll drive." Mason and I said in unison. We turned to look at each other, and I saw Mason had an amused look on his face.
"Neither one of you will be driving. I'm driving to bingo. Then you two can figure it out." She said, grabbing her purse off of the white couch. Their entire house was white and dark brown. It was a very calm, subtle setting with many windows, curtains, and nice, wood floors. It had 4 floors, each with at least 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. When Mason said his parents were secret agents, I didn't expect them to be RICH secret agents!
We followed Mrs. Langston out to their Camaro. Yes, they had a Camaro. It was red, with black wheels, of course. The interior was leather, and it was also black. It had a giant sound system and tinted windows. Basically, it was your typical rich person car.
Mrs. Langston seemed to have troubles getting into the car, so Mason helped her in. He buckled her seatbelt for her and closed her door, before walking over to the passenger seat. I guess I'm sitting in the back. Great.
I don't know how Mrs. Langston was able to drive this thing. She was a very small woman, and she could barely see over the steering wheel. I don't think Mason would let her drive if it wasn't safe.... Right?
*****
"Have fun you too!" Mrs. Langston called, as she stood and waved from the front door of the Bingo Barn.
"I'll try." Mason said. I rolled my eyes.
"But not TOO MUCH fun!" Mrs. Langston yelled. Mason's face was as red as a tomato, and I'm sure mine looked the same way. She's so embarrassing!
We did Rock Paper Scissors, and Mason cheated so he won, so now he's driving the car. I'm not 100% sure I trust him. Actually, I'm probably not 10% sure I trust him. He's just... Different. I haven't decided if it's a good or bad different yet.
We pulled into the parking lot of Roseview Mall. Mason found a pretty good parking space, and parked the red Camaro. He took the keys, and got out. I guessed that was my cue to get out too. I opened the door, and began walking towards the front doors.
"Hey! Wait up!" Oh no. "Aubrey! It's me!" Please go away... "Hey! Hey Aubrey!"
"Yea?" I said, still not turning around.
"It's me! You know me!" He yelled. No duh. Why do you think I'm running?
"Mhm." I muttered, hurrying through the doors. Stupid Marcus. Can't he tell I'm not interested? I felt someone's hand wrap around my wrist, making me jump.
"Aubrey?" I was relieved when I looked into Mason's big, brown eyes.
"Hey. Sorry, I had to get away from that kid." I told him, shrugging.
"Who's he?" Mason asked.
"His name is Marcus. He's another agent who I've had to work with a few times. He's developed a little crush on me." I said, rolling my eyes. Mason had this look on his face.... Concern?
"There he is." Mason said, pointing. Sure enough, Marcus was trying to look over the crowd of people. I'm guessing he was looking for me. Greeeeatt.
"When will he take a hint?" I exclaimed, annoyed on so many levels.
"Come on." Mason said, grabbing my wrist again.
"What? No!" I hissed, yanking my arm back. Mason just shrugged and started walking towards Marcus. Oh lord have mercy.
I followed Mason and eventually caught up to him. "What do you think you're doing?" I asked him.
"You'll see." He said as he smirked. We approached Marcus, and he spotted me. That goofy smile reappeared on his face.
"Aubrey!" He said, hurrying over to us.
"Hi Marcus." I said, rolling my eyes. Then, I felt something weird around my hips. Mason had snaked his arm around my waist and was now looking directly at Marcus. I tried to cover the look of shock on my face, but it wasn't working.
"Who- who's th-this?" Marcus stuttered, a frown appearing on his face. Well, anything's better than that stupid smile.
"I'm her boyfriend. Who are you?" Okay, what?!?! Did Mason seriously just say that?!?!
"Oh, I'm just a friend.... I guess..." Marcus said, looking at the ground. "I'll see you guys later." He slowly walked away, his eyes never leaving the ground. When he was gone, Mason still hadn't removed his arm. I cleared my throat to indicate that it was still there. He quickly removed it, blush evident on his face.
"Good thinking." I complimented. He smiled.
"Thanks." He said, shrugging. It was silent for a few moments.
"Let's shop." I said, breaking the silence. He laughed. "What?" I said, confused at what was so funny.
"You're a typical girl." He said, smirking. Okay, he did NOT just say that.
"Does a typical girl have a job as a secret agent?" I asked him, crossing my arms. He stayed silent, the smirk leaving his face. That's what I thought.
That was really weird, yet effective. I didn't know Mason had the thinking level above a 5th grader. The only problem is, if Marcus tells Commander, it will be seen as fraternization and I'll be taken off of the case! I NEED this case! Besides, I like working with Mrs. Langston. She smelled like peppermint and she gives me candy.
"Do you want to get some ice cream?" Mason asked, bringing me out of my thoughts.
"Uh sure." I said, giving him a small smile. We had just entered a food court that was full of basically everything that's not good for you. It smelled really good, but I knew that I shouldn't eat any of it. Ice cream is probably okay... They don't deep fry it, right?
I looked around to find an open table. There was one way at the end of the food court. I walked directly over to it and sat down. I pulled out my phone and played flappy bird while I waited for Mason to bring the ice cream.
"Hey." Wait, that's not Mason's voice... I slowly looked up, to see some random guy standing there. He was wearing a black t-shirt, and his pants were falling down. He had a chain around his neck that obviously wasn't real gold. He was somewhat tan, with black hair and brown eyes. He was smiling at me, and it was creeping me out.
"Um... Do I know you?" I asked him, giving him a weird look.
"No, but you could." He said, as he leaned over the table. Ick.
"How about no." I said, rolling my eyes and pushing him away. He looked hurt for a second, but regained his composure.
"You want me. I can tell." He said, smirking and leaning towards me again.
"No. I don't." I told him, standing up. He grabbed my wrists and pulled me towards him so he was looking right down on me.
"You don't want to do that." Oh thank God. It's Mason.
"Oh yeah? And why not?" The guy asked, glaring at Mason.
"She'll punch you so hard, your mom will feel it." Mason said. I giggled a little, but I tried to stop.
"This girl? Nah." The guy said, laughing. That made me mad. I swung my leg around and kicked the back of his knee, so he toppled to the ground. He looked stunned but scrambled to his feet. He tried to punch me, but I grabbed his fist and flipped him. He didn't get up this time. He just groaned in pain.
"Told ya." Mason said, smiling. I laughed, and then looked around. Everyone in the food court was staring. Suddenly, someone started clapping. People followed after them, and eventually, everyone was clapping and cheering. I blushed as I smiled at the crowd of people. Mason started clapping too, making me laugh.
"Let's go." I said to Mason. He nodded and we slowly made our way out of the food court. He handed me my ice cream and we happily walked out to the car.
"Well that was fun." Mason said, eating his ice cream.
"Sure... Let's go with that..." I said, laughing. It was one heck of a rush, that's for sure.
My first day of being a body guard is almost over, but all I've done is protect myself. Maybe this won't be so hard after all...
(A/n: that's the end of this chapter! Do you like Mason? Do you think Mason likes Aubrey? You'll find out eventually! (:
