I waited for the sound of the gun to go off, and squeezed my eyes shut knowing I didn't want to see that. I waited a few seconds... And a few more... And nothing. I opened one eye at a time, and saw the gun still pointed at Mason, but Tina looked confused.
"Dang it! I knew I should've bought more bullets!" She screamed. I sighed with relief. Mason was shaking and couldn't get his eyes off of the gun. I took the opportunity to point my gun at Mrs. Rodriguez, and wanted to pull the trigger really badly.
"You okay?" I asked Mason, my eyes not leaving the woman.
"I'm... I'll be fine." He said, finally breathing.
"Help!" I heard faint screaming coming from right below us. "Help!"
"They're downstairs." I told Mason.
"No duh." He said, rolling his eyes.
"Shut up!" Tina yelled, stomping on the floor. I don't think she was talking to Mason and I.
"Mrs. Rodriguez, give it up. It's over." I said.
"It's not over until I say it's over!" She said. She was having some sort of freak attack and her right eye was twitching.
"Just shut your mouth." I told her. "You'll catch flies."
"Agent Coleson, where's your brother?" She asked, suddenly. I was stunned by the question and it brought tears to my eyes.
"None of your freaking business." I said, blinking the tears away and not allowing them to fall.
"Ah. I see." She said, the creepy smile coming back. I think I liked her more when she was going nuts.
"No. You don't see. You're blind to all of the reality around you. You call me princess? Look how much you're going through just for money! And you also think that you're still going to get it? Uh uh. I don't think so." I said, snapping once again.
"You don't even know me." She said, still smirking. "I'm not afraid of your judgement."
"Well my judgement is the same as everyone else's around me." I said.
"Really? Mason, sweetie, what do you think of me?" She asked, turning to him. He looked surprised, but spoke up.
"I think... I think you're dealing with some personal problems right now, and maybe you need a therapist or something, but I think you're a dirty, lying, selfish, no-good idiot who wants to hurt anyone who has any money." He finished. Wow. I'm impressed.
"Bravo!" I said, giving him a quick round of applause. I quickly aimed the gun back at Tina and smiled. "See?"
"You're both just children. You know nothing." She stated.
"I know a lot more than you." I retorted, laughing.
"Well at least my brother isn't going to die." She said, crossing her arms. It hurt, of course, but I stayed silent.
"That is none of your business." Mason said, stepping forward.
"Mason, it's fine." I said. He looked concerned, but didn't say anything else. "Is that all you got?" I asked.
"He's in another country. You'll never see him again." She said, trying to aggravate me.
"Anything else?" I asked.
"You won't even hear his last words as he cries for help. You can't be there for him, and he'll die out there... Alone." She said. Ouch. That one hurt a lot.
"HE won't die alone. He has me and my parents to back him up. We're always with him." I said. "But you, on the other hand.... You have no one. So if anyone is dying alone, it's you."
"Excuse me?" She said.
"You're excused." I said, smirking.
"You're just a little brat." She said, rolling her eyes.
"And you're a dirty RAT." I said. "You can even get a man!"
"Yes I can!" She said, angrily.
"No you can't. You're just a useless, no good little woman who has no one there for her." I said.
"People are here for me!" She shouted. "You're here! He's here! Mr. And Mrs. Langston are all here!"
"Are we here by CHOICE? Or by force?" I asked her, rhetorically.
"You-" she said, but was cut off by a loud sound.
"We have you surrounded. Come out with your hands up!" Someone yelled through a speaker phone.
"The police are here?!" She yelled.
"Mhm." I said, happy with what I had done. "Mason, go get your grandparents." He nodded and found the staircase leading to where they were being hid. Police officers quickly filed in, and tried to hand cuff her. She struggled, of course, and then tried to converse with them.
"Please, I'm too young to go to jail!" She begged.
"No ma'am. You're not." One of the officers said.
"Are you calling me old?" She asked, offended.
"Yes." He said, shrugging. She gasped, and brought her hands up to her face so she could pretend to cry. The police officers were with her, so I chose the time to bend down and pick up a bobby pin that had fallen out of my hair. Once it was in my hand, and I slowly turned around, only to see Mrs. Rodriguez with a gun pointed at me. She had stolen it from one of the police officers' belts.
It all happened so fast, I barely had time to take it all in. Mason had just reached the top of the staircase with the Langstons, and was now seeing what was taking place. He started sprinting, and before I knew it, he was jumping in front of me. The sound of the bullet rang out, and Mason fell to the floor.
"No!" I screamed, once he had fallen. Mrs. Langston burst into tears and Mr. Langston seemed to be frozen with fear. I quickly got to Mason's side, and saw the bullet had hit him straight in the chest. "Mason! No no no!" I said, looking at his injury.
"It's okay, Aubrey." He said, in a quiet voice.
"No it isn't. But it will be. We need paramedics in here, stat!" I shouted to the officers. They just stood there, with sad expressions, and some took their hats off in respect. "Why aren't you doing anything?! Go! Go! Go!" I yelled.
"Aubrey." Mason said, grabbing my hand softly. "I think we both know why they aren't doing anything."
"No. You're not dying. Do you hear me? You're not dying!" I shrieked.
"Aubrey, please." He said, looking up at me. I slowly began to cry, and I held Mason's hand tighter.
"I'm so sorry." I repeated, over and over again.
"It's not your fault." He said, softly.
"Yes it is!" I said. "If I could've protected you better-"
"She still would've shot me." He interrupted. "Don't blame yourself."
"I- I don't know... I can't..." I stuttered, still crying.
"Shhh." He said. "It's alright."
"I can... I can fix this myself. Get me some... Some paper towels... And uh... Tape! And..." I said, thinking and wiping my tear stained face.
"Aubrey..." He said.
"No!" I shouted. "You can't die on me!"
"I'm not. I'm not." He said. "But I need to tell you something."
"What?" I asked, leaning closer.
"I love you." He said.
"You... Do?" I said. A small smile appeared on his face.
"Yes." He said. "Take care of my grandparents."
"No, please no!" I said, grasping his hand tighter, but it was too late. His eyes slowly drifted shut, and his body went limp. I balled, as I laid my head on his chest. I looked across the room at the Langstons, and they were both in tears. The officers looked upset, and then I saw Tina. The gun was once again pointed at me, but I didn't try to move. I didn't scream. I didn't run. I let her shoot me. I felt the impact of the bullet in my head, and then the world went dark.
