"Shh! Shh! She's waking up!"
"Well what do we tell her?"
"We need to rush her to surgery. There's not much time."
"Aubrey?" I slowly opened my eyes.
"Mom?" I said, when I saw her leaning over my bed.
"Sweetheart! Please, you need to be okay. Alright? Do it for me. And for your father and your brother." She said, tearing up. I nodded, to show her I understood.
"We need to get her to-" the doctor started again.
"What she NEEDS is a few minutes alone with her family." Commander butted in. "So please, everyone, give them some privacy." The doctors reluctantly left the room and entered the hallway. I was left with my mom on my right, and my dad on my left.
"What... What happened?" I asked them.
"Just rest, honey." My mom said.
"But-"
"No, Aubrey. Just relax." My dad interrupted.
"Don't worry, sweetie. We're going to make sure you don't have to go back to that dangerous place ever again." My mom said, rubbing my arm.
"You mean... The diner?" I asked.
"No. The agency." My dad corrected. I sat in shock for a moment, and then almost blew up at them.
"You- you can't do that!" I said, as loudly as I could. "It's not fair! It's not your choice!"
"Actually, it IS our choice." My mom said. "You're only seventeen."
"Only for two more months!" I shot back. "That's basically just my recovery time, and then I can go back. And you can't stop me." My parents sighed.
"Just think about it." My dad said. Suddenly, the door flew open.
"Sorry I'm late!" A familiar voice said, closing the door behind himself.
"Logan!" I gasped. He came strolling in, in his military uniform. He looked so professional.
"Hey kiddo!" He said. "How ya feelin?"
"Could be better." I said, honestly. He smiled and sat down at the edge of my bed. "Mom? Dad? Can I just talk to Logan for awhile... Alone?" I asked. They nodded and quickly left the room.
"So obviously work has been... Uh... Busy." Logan said. I laughed.
"Yeah. You could say that." I said. "So... How was the military?"
"It's good, I guess. Definitely a rush." Logan said, chuckling to himself.
"Please stay here." I said, suddenly.
"What?" He said, confused.
"Just stay. Don't go back! I need you here." I told him. He sighed and grabbed my hand.
"I'll be here for another month, and then I'm leaving again. I'm so sorry, Aubrey." He said. A sad feeling came over me.
"So... This is it?" I said. "I have to GET SHOT for you to come back?"
"Aubrey, please-"
"No, that's alright. I guess I'll just have to do it again. Once a month." I told him, pulling my hand out of his and crossing my arms.
"Don't be like that, Aubrey. You can't do that." He said.
"Yes I can. And I will, if that's what it takes." I told him with a huff.
"Aubrey, listen-"
"No! You listen!" I yelled. "I've been waiting for MONTHS just to hear your voice again, and then you come back and you say you're going to leave again?!"
"I'm sorry." Was all he said. There was an uneasy silence between the two of us. "I need to go back. My guys need me too. Now I get that you need me right now because you were dying. But the guys back where I was need me, because they almost die every day." He said. I suddenly felt a little guilty.
"I- I'm so sorry, Logan. I didn't know." I apologized.
"It's alright. I know you didn't know. But try and keep that in mind when you're missing me." He said.
"Time for surgery!" A doctor yelled from behind the door.
"Are you ready?" Logan asked me.
"Not really." I said, honestly.
"You'll do great, kiddo." He said, giving my hand a quick squeeze before standing up.
"Good bye." I said.
"It's not good bye yet." He said, smiling. I nodded and smiled too. The doctors began to file in and they were really bothering me with their little tools and whatnot. They were poking and prodding me like I was some circus animal.
"Okay, back off." I told them, sternly.
"We're only trying to help." One of the doctors said.
"Well, you're not doing a very good job." I retorted. "Everyone! Back. Up." I yelled. They all glanced at each other, but did what I said. "Listen. I get that you're trying to help me, but you're also hurting me in the process. Please, just take me safely to surgery and we'll be good." They all agreed, and slowly wheeled my bed down the hallway.
"I need to say good bye." My mom said, walking up next to my bed.
"Mom, you don't-"
"Shh. Just listen." She said. I nodded. "I know you're going to be fine after this surgery, but you need to promise me you'll keep a positive attitude. You need to believe you will make it. Please. Because if you don't make it, I won't make it." My mom said. Suddenly, all of the memories of what had happened came flooding back.
"Mason." I whispered. My mom looked uncomfortable for a second.
"He died, sweetheart." She said, finally. A tear streamed down my cheek when I heard those words.
"It's all my fault." I said, quietly.
"No it's not. What happened to keeping a positive attitude?" My dad said, showing up beside me. I shook my head.
"She shot him and now he's dead. I was supposed to protect him." I said, crying.
"Honey, please-"
"No, mom. Can YOU please be quiet for a moment? It's respectful." I said, angrily. We reached the doors to my surgical room.
"Good bye, darling." My dad said, as he kissed my forehead. "I love you."
"Bye, sweetie." My mom said, giving my hand one last squeeze.
"You can do this, kiddo." Logan said, as he ran up to my bed. "Don't give up now. True, Mason gave his life for you, but don't let him die for nothing." I thought about this for a moment, and then nodded. He was right, like always.
The doctors pushed me through the door and into the room. There were sterilized tools everywhere, and many doctors were on hand. They put a mask over my nose and mouth, and told me to count down from twenty.
"20....19....18....17.......16........15.........14..." And then i fell into the darkness.
