It had been about two weeks and I could now finally say that my father was missing. That on its own wouldn't be a terrible thing, but the fact that he pays for groceries and the house makes it detrimental to me. If I didn't have the money in a month, I'd be kicked out and forced to live with my mom or somewhere else until I was eighteen.
At times like this, having a best friend like Maurice came in handy.
I was lying on my bed, staring at my lighter. It was the only thing lighting up the dark room other than the moonlight at the moment. I heard a soft creak and smiled a little bit as I looked to my side to see Maurice standing beside me.
"Hey there, stranger." I said and held out the lighter slightly. Fire apparently didn't bother them unless it touched them (like humans). Maurice had told me about the time he had set some ass hat monster on fire with a flame thrower, so I knew holding out a little lighter to see him better wouldn't hurt. He smiled at me before putting the lighter out with his fingers as if it were a candle. As I put it on my nightstand, he jumped on my bed with me laying down on it. I rolled my eyes and looked at him before he got down on all fours, close to my face.
"Are you in a mood, come on! Get up." He said, trying to pull me up. I shrugged him off and sat up, backing up against my headboard as he sat down all the way.
"Somethings... wrong." I said, not knowing how I was going to put it.
"Your hand didn't disappear, did it?" He asked and I raised an eyebrow.
"No, was it supposed to?" I asked and he shook his head quickly.
"No, of course not, you being a human is great." he said and I scoffed.
"Sure." I muttered before getting back to what I was saying, "Anyways, you notice how I haven't had any new black eye or anything in a while?" I asked and he leaned closer to my face, as if to check even though we both knew he didn't need to. He quickly backed away once again.
"Yeah, why? Where's this going?" he asked and I sighed.
"My dad went missing. I'm going to have to move in with my mom." I said quietly and he stopped playing around, which was a very rare sight from him.
"Oh." He said quietly before returning to his natural state, "Or...!" He jumped off my bed, standing up, "You could come live with me, downstairs. I mean, I know its not that cozy, but you get used to it. Come on. You wouldn't have to deal with any of the stuff up here, it would just be monster ball and food and arcade games every day and pranking and laughing every night." he said, spilling everything out without giving me a second to think about it. I stared at him before opening my mouth.
"Maurice, do you even have a home or do you just wander around down there during the day?" I asked, turning my body to him and looking up from my spot.
"Well, I don't actually live in a house but there are some come and go places that are comfy, kind of like motels here." he answered slightly awkwardly before sighing, "Look, I'm not telling you to make up your mind now, just think about it okay. All I'm saying is that it's a hell of a lot better down there than it is up here." He said and I nodded.
"Give me sometime to think about it, okay. That would mean giving up my humanity, and although you're a pretty great monster, I don't know if I'm ready for that kind of change yet." I said and he sat on the bed next to me, "Until then, though..." I trailed off and wrapped my arms around him before falling back, bringing him down with me as we both fell on the bed with our heads on the pillow, "I'm sleepy."
I smirked and cuddled close to him. He seemed to tense but then relaxed and pulled me closer to him with a tight squeeze. I wasn't really that tired, I just wanted an excuse to cuddle, specifically with him.
As I did begin to drift off to sleep, I found myself thinking about the one unimaginable thing I could ever think.
I think I'm falling for you.
