Chapter Four
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
I slammed my hand down on the loud alarm clock.
It was screaming in the ear, awakening me from that same repeated dream.
It was 6 A.M, not exactly a joyful hour in the morning.
I crawled out of the thick duvet and grabbed my clothes, cold and not even close to ready for the big day.
I arrived at the stadium when the sky was just awakening, red and pink shades lightly faded through the clouds of dark blue.
The hill disappeared behind me and revealed the majestic stadium.
"Shit,"
Auditioners stood in lines of hundreds outside the doors with their tents and bags and loud excitable voices. Tents though, real tents. And so many people! At 6 in the morning?
The things people will do for a dream to come true.
I headed down the steep path as I did yesterday, passing the determined crowds cheering and singing and doing all sorts of odd things.
I showed the guard my pass and he opened the door for me. I entered the same darkened corridor as yesterday, only this time a mix of fear and anticipation was present.
I strolled into the crowded area, it was filled with busy crew members running around and checking files in the desk folders.
“Jasmin!”
I twisted round to face Andrew, who patted me on the back.
“Now, I need you in the waiting room; you will be given a list of names and registration numbers. Find the auditioner and take them and their family backstage for extra interviews and camera pre-stage camera shots. A loud speaker will call for them to meet you at the doors leading backstage, understand?”
“Uh, I think so? But what if-“
“Excellent!”
Andrew scurried over to another group of people.
I repeated his instructions over in my mind, still a bit bewildered by the giant stack of information.
While my head dealt with my destructive memory, I followed arrow signs into the contestant’s waiting room.
The space was filled with people. Young and old, loud and silently anticipating the day.
The brave contestants sat on chairs and sofas, lining up for food and the drink bar while others stood in circles singing louder than needed.
“Lovelock? Jasmin Lovelock?”
A short lady in uniform called me over from the information desks.
“You need to put your uniform on immediately; auditions start in half an hour,”
She handed me a stack of clothes.
“Your communicator is wrapped in the top, only use in serious cases.”
She ticked my name off her clipboard list and left.

The line for the toilets was so long I started playing flappy bird on my phone, ((even though I would probably get kicked out for trying to get a new high score while working)) but finally changed I was given my own clipboard of names.
“Good morning and welcome to Manchester’s X Factor Auditions!”
The room roared with cheering and whistling in reply to the loud speaker.
“The judges are in place and the show is ready to go! When your registration number is called please wait at doors 1 and 2 to your left. Good luck everyone!”
Another wave of excitement generated inside the crowded camera covered room as the day began.
4 hours later
‘I CAN’T FEEL MY LEGS AMELIA THERE ARE HOT BOYS EVERYWHERE AND I’M RUNNING FROM ROOM TO ROOM AND SWEATING AND GROSS AND OH MY GOD CALL AN AMBULANCE’
‘could you get one of those hot singer boys numbers for me pls’
‘AMY DID YOU NOT HEAR ME I CAN’T FEEL MY LEGS’
‘STOP COMPLAINING EVERY GIRL IN OUR SCHOOL WOULD TRADE PLACES WITH YOU IN A HEARTBEAT SO GO ENJOY YOURSELF’
‘thanks for the support’
‘wait have u seen the judges yet IS SIMON COWELL THERE??????’
I stuffed my phone into my pocket and took the next contestant through to backstage.
She was 14 years old with long, blonde hair and two pink ribbons around her wrists. You could tell she was nervous, her fingertips were shaking.
“Hey, are you okay?”
I’m not sure if I’m supposed to make friendly conversation with the contestants (oops I’ve been breaking that rule all day), but her family were being interviewed, so she was left with me.
“I’m scared,” she answered.
“Don’t worry about it, I’m sure you’ll be fine.”
She shook her head.
“No, my whole family have singing careers so they expect me to fall in line. The problem is I have a terrible voice.”
I bent my knees so I was her height,
“It doesn’t matter if you don’t get through, sure your family may be a bit disappointed, but, not many people are brave enough to go sing out there. So having the courage to do it is definitely something special.”
She smiled a little and fiddled with her shaking fingers,
“Thanks.”
Even though she thanked me, I wasn’t at all convinced that she was any more confident.
The loud speaker went off again and I rushed back to the waiting room.
