April

I'm not really fond of the rain. I hate how it makes going out inconvenient, how it mars outdoor activities and how it turns a happy day into a gloomy one. It usually gives me the blues but today, it surprisingly caused me to be in high spirits. Going to bed with a happy heart. Good night! #ILoveThisDay

Only 50 seconds have passed when I updated my status on Facebook but it already has 3 comments.

1. So, something happened earlier. Is that why you forgot you had a cellphone and missed my calls?

2. I smell something fishy.

3. Are you gonna tell me about it or what?

I took my phone and called Ella. She picked up on the first ring.

"So, you love the rain now? Did your knight in shining armor ask you to dance with him in the rain? Or wait. OMG! Did he kiss you in the rain? Huh? Did he?! Come on, Martinez! Tell me!"

"Will you please calm down?"

"I will, if you tell me what happened!"

"How can I tell you when you won't let me? My goodness, Alonzo! You've already asked three more questions before I can even answer the first one!"

"Oops! Sorry."

Oh, Ella. I don't think I'll ever understand how someone so gorgeous can be such a blabber!

"Listen, okay? It was raining cats and dogs and I didn't have an umbrella. Troy helped m-"

"I already know that. Migs told me. What I want to know is what happened when it was raining. What's with your Hashtag I Love This Day?!"

"Nothing...happened."

"Liar!"

"That hashtag has nothing to do with Troy."

And there was an awkward silence.

"Okay. Maybe it has, but not really. It's about Mom."

"Auntie Rose?"

"Yeah. Bessy, did you see how she embraced me? Did you hear what she said? She called me baby! She called me sweetheart. She hugged me so tight I could no longer breathe. She kissed my cheeks, my forehead. She hasn't done any of those in the past 11 years!," I said with so much happiness in my heart that I burst into tears.

"She was so worried about you. She was crying and she asked us to call you or to check if you've finally replied every after a minute or two."

"She loves me.," I mumbled.

"Of course, she does. She's your mother."

"I know but for the past 11 years, I never felt her love. She was just civil to me. You know that. She sends me to school, attends to my needs, cooks for me but we never really... talked. We eat together but in silence. I hug her, I kiss her but she never hugged or kissed me back. And today, she did!"

"Oh, Bessy! I know how much you've wished for this day to come."

"I just hope it's not only for today."

"I heard her pray for your safety and promised  she'd be a better mom. I think she'd do everything to make up for lost time."

"Really? Oh, I'm the happiest girl at the moment! How can I not love this day?"

"So, you're telling me you loved the rain today because-"

"Because I wasn't able to go home early; I missed your calls; Mommy got worried and realized there's no reason to be miserable because even if she lost Daddy, she still has a daughter."
