Together They Stand (Part 3)
A low groan escaped his lips as Kion groggily opened his eyes. He blinked his eyes rapidly a few times until his blurred vision cleared and he could see properly again. For a few bewildered seconds, he forgot where exactly he was until he saw the stone walls and a few stalactites over his head, only then he remembered that he and Fuli had taken shelter in the rather cramped cave to escape the blizzard. And speaking of his Cheetah friend...
His ears flicked slightly as he picked up a low humming sound and at the same time, he could feel something soft and plushy against his body. His eyes trailed down to see Fuli, her face pressed against his chest and her legs tangled around his, as she purred contentedly while obviously in the middle of a rather deep slumber. The Lion cub let out a happy chuff as he watched his sleeping friend before gently gyrating his paws that were tightly wrapped around the Cheetah's back, savouring the feel of her warm and silky fur.
Kion realized that they must have fallen asleep while waiting for the blizzard to subside, though he wasn't exactly surprised, given how warm and comfortable they felt while they embraced each other the entire time they were in the cave, despite the surrounding sub-zero temperatures that threatened to freeze them to death. Without moving his head, Kion craned his neck to look at the small slit that was the cave's entrance. Outside, he could see that the blizzard had subsided slightly, but it would still be dangerous to go out there as the thick whiteness of the blowing snow reduced visibility, and that would make it ten-times dangerous to anyone wanting to climb the face of the mountain to reach the peak.
The Lion cub then returned his gaze to his sleeping friend. Since it was obvious they can't leave their temporary shelter just yet, he decided to savour this moment where the warmth of Fuli's body was comfortably pressed against his, and he planned to relish every second they held each other like that, until the time came where they'll have to leave the cave and continue on their way to King Sokwe's kingdom at the mountain's peak. As comfortable as he felt to be huddled together with his close friend, his dutiful mind constantly reminded him that they were still on a mission and are only taking a temporary break to shelter from the blizzard.
Still, that didn't stop him from gently nuzzling Fuli's forehead before soothingly giving her a few short licks to a particular spot behind her left ear, earning him a soft sigh that escaped her lips. Fuli started to stir slightly before blearily opening her eyes, and her emerald-green orbs instantly met with his hazel ones. An automatic smile instantly graced the Cheetah cub's lips the moment their eyes met.
"Had a good sleep?" Kion gently asked with a subtle smirk on the corners of his lips.
"Yeah... definitely," Fuli responded back, with an equally playful smile. "Especially since you held me the entire time I was asleep."
Kion could feel the skin beneath the fur of his cheeks slowly redden as he let out a nervous laugh. "Haha yeah.... um... sorry I accidentally woke you up."
The cheeky smile on Fuli's lips grew wider as she gazed into his eyes once again before she closed her eyes and pressed her muzzle against his chest once again, her ears folded back as she contentedly nuzzled his golden-brown fur that concealed his sturdy chest muscles. "It's okay... I don't mind..." she softly purred into his chest, sending tingling shivers down his spine.
Kion reacted by flashing a smile towards her before once again gently rubbing his muzzle against her forehead, taking in her sweet, flowery scent and earning a louder, blissful purr from the Cheetah cub. Normally, Fuli would have been put off by anything related to romance or even displays of affection, as she thought it was 'immature' and contradicts her generally firm, no-nonsense nature. But now that she personally experienced the warmth and comfort that graced her the entire time she cuddled with Kion, she just couldn't care how immature or ridiculous she looked... everything about their close embrace felt just right. And besides, there was no-one around to judge how she looked. It was just her... and her Lion best friend.
"Lion Guard....."
I spoke too soon... Fuli mentally groaned to herself.
Both felines pricked their ears when they heard an unfamiliar voice shouting for them from somewhere outside their cave.
Kion regretfully had to let go from Fuli's embrace and headed towards the small slit that was the entrance to their shelter.
"Lion Guard!!"
The voice shouted once again and it sounded like it was coming closer, though Kion thought he heard a cawing noise right after the voice's shouts.
"We're here! Right through the slit on the face of the mountain!" He shouted back, hoping the owner of the voice could hear him. He and Fuli held back and waited for a response.
Kion's eyes widened when he picked up a medium-sized silhouette amongst the thick whiteness of the blowing snow whizzed by the entrance at lightning speed. A few seconds passed and nothing else was seen or heard. That was, until a medium-sized bird suddenly shot through the tiny slit of the cave's entrance before crash landing right in the space between Kion and Fuli with a loud "Oooomph!"
"Whoah!" Kion exclaimed, as he and Fuli jumped back in surprise by the bird's sudden and unexpected entrance.
The bird coughed heavily as it picked itself up from the ground before shaking its body to get rid of the snow that layered his feathers, revealing himself to be a mountain buzzard.
"Hey, wait a minute.... are you King Sokwe's messenger?" Fuli asked the bird with a raised brow, remembering that Simba had earlier mentioned that King Sokwe's messenger was Mountain Buzzard.
"Yes... yes I am," The bird panted while shaking the last bit of snow on his tail-feathers. "The name's Mfuasi."
Kion was just about to introduce himself and Fuli to the mountain buzzard when he unexpectedly raised his wing at them and cut him off, "Don't worry, I know who you two are. I'm really sorry for being brash, but I'm afraid we have no time to lose. King Sokwe has sent me to come looking for you when he saw the heavy blizzard surrounding the way up to his kingdom. And now that I found you two, I am to guide you and bring you to the Gorilla Kingdom right now. The blizzard is blowing on the other side of the mountain where the Outlanders are scaling the mountain as well, and we're hoping it will slow them down. We're taking advantage of the blizzard so that you two will arrive at the Kingdom first before the Outlanders do."
Kion looked from the bird to the heavy snow blowing about outside the cave. "But the blizzard is still blowing heavily and we'll have very low visibility when we're scaling the mountain. How are we going-" He began in a doubtful tone before he was once again cut off by Mfuasi.
"I already thought of that on my way here. What I'll do is I'll fly low and as close to the path as possible. I'll be cawing loudly as I fly so you'll be able to follow my voice. Just walk in a single file and keep following my caws and you'll be fine," The buzzard hastily said while hopping his way towards the slit before turning back to the felines, waiting for their response.
Kion looked at Fuli first, who solemnly gave him a firm nod before looking back at the avian. "Alright, Mfuasi. Show us the way!"
Mfuasi nodded and squeezed through the slit before taking flight, with Kion and Fuli following after him while sticking close to the narrow path that went all the way up the mountain.
"REMEMBER! SINGLE FILE AND FOLLOW MY CAWS!" The buzzard shouted at the felines as he flew just a few feet off in the air before letting out a series of loud caws that was loud and steady enough to guide Kion and Fuli through the harsh blizzard.
