Together They Stand (Part 4)
Braving through the icy winds that bellowed into their faces, both Kion and Fuli pricked their ears up and followed after Mfuasi's constant caws as the avian guided them across the trail. Fuli was only inches behind Kion and already the howling blizzard made his bright-coloured orange fur slowly fade from her vision.
And it was even worse for Kion, too, as the thundering whiteness of the snow meant he could only see at most only two feet ahead of him, which made the whole situation even more tensed as somewhere on their right was a sheer drop thousands of feet down the mountain. As he was the one walking in front, his and Fuli's lives were now completely dependant on him being able to judge (or guess) the width of the path they're on and him being able to keep up and carefully follow after Mfuasi's guiding caws.
"I just hope we get to the top before we're frozen to death!" Fuli groaned with exhaustion tinged in her voice after almost half an hour of climbing.
"I just hope we get to the top and still have the energy to protect the Gorillas from the Outlanders..." Kion added, his optimism of surviving the mission slowly wearing thin with each step they took.
The next few minutes wore on endlessly and both Kion and Fuli felt they were hardly making any progress. Just then, both of them heard a loud "UMPH!" followed by a loud thud that landed somewhere in front of them. The mountain buzzard's cawing had stopped at the exact moment they heard those noises, so it didn't take long for the felines to realize what had happened.
"Mfuasi! Are you okay?!" Kion cried out, scampering ahead and finding the downed avian laying at the spot where they heard the thud.
"I- I don't know. I think so... I mean- one moment I was flying and the next, there's this hunk of snow that suddenly landed right on top of me in mid-air..." the buzzard groaned, struggling to hold on to his consciousness as Kion's and Fuli's concerned faces started spinning and fading through his vision.
Then, they heard more thuds from behind and in front of them. Piles of snow and small rocks started tumbling from the face of the mountain and crashed onto the path, which was followed by a low rumbling sound that sounded all too familiar to the mountain buzzard.
"AVALANCHE!" Mfuasi squawked, "We gotta get outta here!"
Not wasting another millisecond, Kion quickly yanked Mfuasi into his jaws and ran forwards up the path with Fuli close behind. The low rumbling sound slowly transcended into a louder, thundering roar as huge blankets of snow started collapsing and burying the path behind them. It was a race against almost certain death as they had to out-pursue the collapsing wall of snow from above that threatened to bury them alive if they weren't fast enough.
For Kion, with the blizzard still blowing about into his face, speed wasn't the only issue he had. The constant bellowing of snow meant he was running almost blind with visibility limited to only a couple of feet ahead of him.
"I hope this path is a straight one!" He exclaimed, voice muffled with the avian wedged between his jaws.
"It's not! There's going to be a corner somewhere up ahead that will take us to the mountain's shoulder where we would be safe! But we could also die if you overshoot the corner and end up hurling towards the ground instead!" Mfuasi yelled back, his voice drowned by the thundering noise of the avalanche that was slowly catching up to them.
This added more to Kion's concern and by now, even he felt it was almost impossible to survive the entire ordeal. If they weren't buried by the avalanche, they would end up running straight towards the edge of the mountain because they couldn't see where they were going. "Fuli! How are things going on back there?"
