Family Emblems (Part 1)
I hid in a space behind the shelf and held my breath, I could hear footsteps, it wasn't loud and heavy but light and elegant, supposedly those of a woman. I couldn't see much, but there was a strong familiar scent, I smelled roses with a hint of lavender, a very odd combination yet it worked. Definitely a woman!
To my left I could see her wearing a black leather cloak, what was she doing there on the floor? Something I overlooked! And in the blink of an eye she was gone, I didn't see her face, only her long silky white hair, the colour wasn't grey or dull, it resembled snow, soft, glimmering in the light.
I waited a few minutes and then exited from behind the shelf and walked over to the trap door. I observed it looking for anything unusual, but there was nothing, I continued towards the door, and just before I walked through I glimpsed a symbol carved into the wall just above. I ran as fast as my legs could have taken me away from the tree, when I was at a good distance I removed the medallion from inside my clothes, remembering my promise to my father, I stared at it in confusion .
"I don't understand, the symbol, it looks just like my medallion." I said aloud.
On my tenth birthday, my mother had given me a small wooden chest, very fragile, antique, it seemed to be centuries old. I gently opened the lid and looked inside, I lifted the leather chord from the chest, at the end dangled a pendant made of silver, polished with its edges as sharp as an eagles talons, it was perfect , it shone under the candle light.
At the base of the chest was a letter sealed in red wax which was stamped by a matrix in intaglio. The emblem on the wax was the same as my medallion, the letter wasn't addressed to anyone. It read:
Dear child,
If you are reading this then it means you have reached of age, I may or may not be with you right now, but if you are reading this it means that you are my successor. This is my gift to you, it is the only one left of its kind, when I married your mother, I had it made, and I would expect that you do the same for your eldest child. This is meant to protect you, you must wear it, for once you place it over your neck you must never remove it. I have so much to tell you. I love you.
Your Father,
Alixandre Devoir
Until next time.........
