Overactive Imagination

"You must be imagining that...."

"You always have creative imagination...."

"You were probably tired....."

Its not that. I know that I wasn't imagining that.....I mean yeah, I always daydream when I was younger and stuff, even though I still daydream now, but I know what I saw was real.

It all started when I was working the evening and night shift. It was only me and one other female worker and the day was slow, so that allowed me to stare into space and slightly daydream, since I tend to get ideas from them.

After what felt like hours, I was suddenly stirred awake by the other female worker. "Okay Sophie I have to go, will you be alright closing up?" she asked me, which I nodded in response. "Yeah I'll be fine, take care" I bid her goodbye as she started leaving.

I got used to being by myself during the night shift, so it's nothing new since I had gotten used to the Halloween decorations. There wasn't much to do since I had taken care of everything that was needed to be done, so I was just at the cashier, blankly staring into space.

Then I suddenly jumped when I heard one of the decorations activated before letting out a sigh.

"It's nothing new" I softly mutters to myself, knowing that was the second time it happened this week and before I could daydream again, my eye caught sight of someone outside the store.

I couldn't see the person's face, but I saw that they were simply wearing a simple pale red sweater and jeans, but that what I could pick up from the lights of the store.

I simply thought that they were heading back home since the last time I had checked the time, it was ten minutes past midnight, which I didn't mind since I tend to stay up very late.

Ignoring the person outside, I walked away from the cashier and towards the activated decoration to turn it off and after I did it, I walked back, but when I looked through the front door, I saw that the person had moved closer. It made me think for a second before shaking my head, thinking that the person is simply doing some last minutes shopping for Halloween and simply ignored them once more.

I, then, looked down and opened the notebook, that I always kept with me and wrote down some more ideas that I came up with, not wanting to forget them. Then I heard the bell ring and looked up and barely caught the site of the pale red sweater disappearing behind an aisle.

For some reason, I had a strange feeling about the strange person, but I simply pushed it down, thinking that I'm just overreacting and looked back down on my notebook, finishing up writing down my ideas before closing the notebook and looked back up.

The only sound I could hear was the soft footsteps from the person, since it was weird since I don't think I ever heard of anyone having soft footsteps, making me frown a bit.

I couldn't help, but rudely think of how long will the person take until they find what they want and leave. Then I heard the footsteps moving towards me, which I let out a sigh of relief, thinking that they found what they need and turn towards the sound, but frowns seeing the hoodie from the jacket covering their head, shadowing their face.

They walked in front of the cashier, "Did you find anything you need?" I politely asked them, but they didn't response and it looked like they were staring at me, slowly making me feel uncomfortable.

"Sir?" I called out once more. Then the person lifts their head, revealing their face and it made me inhale sharply, strangely feeling a bit scared, which I didn't know why.

Their skin was sickly pale white with slightly sunken eyes, missing a few teeth and dull empty dark brown, almost black, eyes, but for some reason those eyes made me stiffens. I started hearing a slight ringing sound in my ears as I kept staring at the stranger before me, then I felt myself slowly struggling to breath when I saw something black slowly dripping from their month and I suddenly smelled something, like something that was slowly decaying.

I didn't know how long I was staring at the person, but I remembered snapping out of it when I was shaken away by the workers for their next shift.

"Hey Sophie, Are you alright?" the male worker asked me in a concern tone. "Huh?" I simply said still in a daze. "Maybe...you should go home, I can give you a ride" he asked me, still concerned and it took me a few seconds to actually respond and slowly shook my head.

"N-No....I'll be fine..." I replied, giving him a smile, trying to convince him, which I seen that he didn't believe me, but he agreed with me.

Then after that, I had gotten back home and instantly got my drawing notebook and started drawing the person that I had seen and after a few hours, I finally finished and when I looked at it, I could faintly feel a bit sick from the faint smell that I remembered, but I shook it off and closed the notebook book.

I remembered the next day, I asked around about the strange person and all that I gotten was 'I don't know, sorry', 'I don't think I seen them before', and 'I like the drawing'.

Soon enough, I started to become frustrated, but I managed to keep my cool.

After a few weeks, the person was still bugging me and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find the answers regarding the person and the answers that I had received was just telling me that I was just imagining that, but I know that I wasn't imagining that!

I know I wasn't.......how can I imagine the feeling that I gotten from the stranger or the decaying smell. After many years of daydreaming, I know that I couldn't have done that......but that soon got me thinking......

Maybe.....maybe I have been imagining that.....besides......

I always have an overactive imagination.......
