It was times like this when I really wished I still had the bond with Lissa. Her face was filled with confusion and hurt as she finally got her chance to interrogate me about everything.
"You killed Victor?" Her voice was quivering as she looked up at me trying to gauge my response. I bowed my head forward trying to decide how to answer. I had to tell her the truth because my aura would say otherwise.
"Yes, there was a fight and I didn't mean to do it. He was so innocent and.." my voice cracked and a small tear escaped the corner of my eye. I silently wished Dimitri was here to help me, but he was on duty around the court with Christian.
"How?" Such a simple question that pained me.
"He tried to escape with Robert and I couldn't let him go. He started an earthquake where I was standing, and then I slammed him against a wall," I paused barely able to continue. Lissa had come into my room knowing that I'd be alone and I could answer questions. Her first question had been about where Victor was in case he was still lose. "And... his neck snapped and he died."
Lissa pulled me into a tight embrace as more tears flowed down my face. "Rose, he clearly tried to provoke you. For all that he's done, to me and you, it's unfortunate but what benefits us."
I tore myself away and stood in anger. "Best for us?" I hissed. "I killed somebody Lissa! For as evil as he was I still killed him out of cold blood!"
Lissa stood and placed a hand on my shoulder forcing me into the chair I'd been sitting in across from her in my room. "That was worded wrong Rose. I'm sorry, but now he can't hurt us again."
My tears were starting to dry and I sniffled in response. Her face looked pained and she seemed desperate to change the topic.
"So what happened between you and Dimitri while you were hiding out in the motels?" She taunted trying to uplift my mood.
"I cheated on Adrian, Liss! I did so many things wrong that I'm haunted by!" I argued. Lissa smiled and put a hand on my leg.
"So what did you two do?" She managed to wiggle her eyebrows and I snorted in laughter through my drying tears. I️ still couldn't raise one eyebrow like Dimitri and now Lissa has mastered it!
"What did you and Christian do in the church attic?" I teased.
"Talk?" She feigned innocence.
"Yes, Liss, we talked." I carried on.
"So what's it like being with your ex-mentor? I mean surely there has to be some awkward moments since he's, like, seven years older."
"It doesn't make much of a difference. We still care for each other as much as any other couple with only a day age between them."
"True, but what did you guys do in the motels?" My face must have cracked under my guardian mask because she started laughing. "I knew it!" She cried out. "You're auras were so strong it was incredible when you first came back."
"And it isn't now?" I asked.
"No," she laughed. "It's just as strong but it's not as surprising."
"I still don't know how you didn't catch on at the academy, for gods sake Liss!"
"I know, you were so obvious that it wasn't obvious. I mean Alberta knew."
"She did?" How did Alberta know? Then again we had been missing for a full day before the attack...
"Not sure," a knock at the door cut Liss off from speaking. Some mumbled words were exchanged and then the door flew open. I reached for my stake that was on my hip and was ready to attack when I saw who it was.
