Three hours later we were on a plane headed to Moscow. Abe had this plan pretty set in stone and wasn't too worried. On the other hand, I was a mess. All I could think about were the dangers and risks, but also the pain I would feel of not being able to fight to get Dimitri back.
Apparently, my dear father had a house in Moscow that was a mansion that could easily fit a small army? Yes, that was quite the surprise for me. Another surprise was when he announced that he would also house a team of other guardians in groups of four at other hotels in Moscow to scout Strigoi out.
The plan was going along good enough with Meredith dressed to fit the role perfectly. Meredith was thin enough for a dhampir to look Moroi from a distance. She currently sat next to me, twiddling her thumbs and acting the role just in case there was a spy on board. The chances of there being a spy were slim to none since it was me, her, Janine, Abe, Guardian Isohov, and the flight crew.
Guardian Spetrav's team was already in downtown Moscow on a entirely separate plan to kill off solo Strigoi before the fight. I was glad to keep getting updates on no guardian deaths, but solo Strigoi deaths were on the rise.
The most difficult part of this mission, I quickly deduced, was going to be me. My attitude was horrible and I knew it... but I struggled not to snap at people like I had back at the academy. One example was when Meredith had turned to me while we were midflight after I had come back from one of many bathroom trips.
"Do you think that this sweater is something Queen Vasilisa would wear?" She had whispered as I sat down. I had thrown clothes at her earlier with no explanation so she wouldn't know it was actually one of Lissa's favorites unless she paid attention to how much Lissa wore it.
"I don't know." My voice dripped sarcastically. "If she did I know she would at least pull it off better."
It had been a cruel shot considering how different Moroi and dhampir bodies were, but I wasn't in the mood to hold hands with Meredith and sing "Kumbaya." Meredith had let out a startled gasp but turned away from me to stare out the window of the plane.
Besides my attitude, my mind also was on two main things- and neither were the mission at hand. First, I couldn't get the fact I had a kid in my stomach out of my head. The idea of me being pregnant had always been out of my mind but sure, it was a definite possibility with all the things that have happened in my life.
But REALLY Rose, I thought to myself. You managed to get pregnant from nearly dying and the timing just has to be while the one person who truly cares about you is kidnapped. AND you can't even fight to get them back. Fantastic job! Mother and girlfriend of the year!
But finally, my thoughts started to turn pessimistic the more I thought about things. Dimitri has been taken by Strigoi... again. What if they were angry with him over how he treated them when he was turned. Would they punish him now that he was a dhampir for the cold and heartless things he did as a Strigoi? Had they lied whenever they said he was okay and they actually turned or killed him? Would he never meet his kid? What about Nikki and Marc? Were they facing punishment that me or Dimitri should suffer?
Since I was so caught up in my thoughts, I didn't even notice the landscape changing until we stopped for the first stop in England for fuel. I grabbed a bite to eat then and was back on the plane until we reached our final destination despite the other two stops for fuel.
When we reached Moscow, I wasn't surprised by the area as I had been the first time. I had always wanted to visit Moscow again since the first time I was tracking down Dimitri. It was ironic that the second time I came here I was also fighting to get Dimitri back.
"Rose, can you meet me in my meeting room?" Abe asked me as we got off his private airplane in the backyard of his mansion in Moscow.
"Sure." I muttered and picked up my bags to carry them to my assigned room. I luckily landed a private room because I planned to share it with Dimitri once we got him back. The other guardians had to stay two to a room or even four!
