Chapter 11: Enemies of Berk

Hiccup woke up with Astrid laying next to him, sleeping on the extended bed that he had made the day before. Not moving at all, the dragon prince stared at his princess, taking in her beautiful features. Eventually, Astrid started to stir and Hiccup got up and changed out of his pants from the day before into his flight suit with new pants. After changing, he headed out of the cave and into the warm Sanctuary. Going up to his father, Hiccup bowed his head and knelt on one knee. The King bid him rise, and so doing, they began to discuss matters that involved all the dragons. The King had a mission for Hiccup, as the Dragon Hunters had become more active, the King had grown more worried. Hiccup's mission was to take them down and he could bring as many dragons as he wanted, although the King recommended he try to keep it to a minimum.

Accepting the mission, Hiccup already knew who he was going to take. Nightwings, of course, along with Flamewheel, a Monstrous Nightmare, and Quickshot, a Deadly Nadder. He didn't want to take Astrid with as he didn't want to place her in danger. He was sure Nightwings felt the same way about Stormfly, so that's why he kept the Nadder off his list. Now the two males had to convince their girlfriends to listen to what they were saying. Astrid was a warrior who probably wouldn't let Hiccup leave her behind, and Stormfly was just as stubborn as her rider. Hiccup went to Nightwings' cave, where he saw the two dragons wrapped around each other. Throwing a pebble, the male Viking woke up his dragon and had him come outside. When they were out of hearing of Stormfly and Astrid, Hiccup explained the mission to Nightwings. He immediately agreed with Hiccup's reasoning of leaving the girls behind. Unfortunately, Astrid and Stormfly were right behind the two as they said that.

"Planning on leaving without me?"

Astrid's voice made Hiccup whip his head around before he winced and said, "Yes. I've fought against these people before and while you are a great warrior, you haven't been able to practice fighting with Stormfly yet. I wouldn't want you getting hurt while we were on a mission."

Knowing he had no choice in persuading his girlfriend, Nightwings faced her and apologized right off the bat.

"I'm sorry, Stormfly, it's just that I don't want you getting hurt."

"I'm safest with you, right?

"Well, yes..."

"And on this mission, I would be with you, right?

"Yes..."

"So why shouldn't I go?"

Bewildered, Nightwings tried to remember his reasons for not bringing Stormfly along, but he just couldn't remember them. He grudgingly admitted that she was right, and asked her if she wanted to come along. Proud of her persuasive skills, Stormfly said yes.

Astrid faced her boyfriend and went through a very similar process as Stormfly.

"How am I supposed to learn while my teacher is fighting with the enemy?"

"Well, you could ask others for help, or just try to figure it out with her..."

"So you're just going to leave me to figure out how to ride my dragon? What if while I'm unaccustomed to her, I fall off? You know Stormfly doesn't like many dragons other than Nightwings and you, and I doubt any other dragon could catch me in time. No, I'll be much safer at your side than sitting here in the Sanctuary trying to learn with Stormfly."

Bewildered, Hiccup just nodded mutely. Smugly, Astrid sauntered up and kissed him passionately, and as he started to kiss back, she pulled away. "Another reason to bring me along..." She huskily breathed in his ear. Shivering, Hiccup quickly agreed with his girlfriend. As the two ladies walked away, Hiccup turned to Nightwings and said, "We should never argue with them again."

"Agreed."

(Two Hours Later)

After letting the other dragons know about the mission, Hiccup and Astrid packed a few extra clothes into the saddlebags on Nightwings and Stormfly, and Hiccup changed into a Night Fury and had Astrid strap on his saddle in case he needed to ride Nightwings, or Stormfly couldn't fly and Astrid needed to ride on him. The five dragons then took off, with Astrid riding on Stormfly's back. Hiccup flew up front with Nightwings pulling rear guard. Flamewheel flew on the right of Stormfly while Quickshot was on the left. Even if the girls had convinced their boyfriends to bring them along, both of them knew they were inexperienced and accepted the protection without protest. The five dragons flew quickly and soon reached their destination. To find the Dragon Hunters, they were going to track them down in a market town and follow their ships back to base. The five dragons landed in the forest, with Hiccup changing back into his Viking self. Astrid and Hiccup then walked into town from the forest, hand in hand, for all the world looking like a harmless couple searching for wares to buy each other. Astrid leaned against her boyfriend and kissed his cheek. Hiccup looked for the Hunters while actually looking for something to buy for Astrid. He had a lot of gold from when he sank the Berserker fleet, as the Scauldrons had all turned it into him. He finally spotted something as beautiful as Astrid, and quite fitting as well. He bought her gift while asking her to go buy some bread, and then hid it in his flight suit before she got back. When his love returned, he thanked her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

The couple were eating their bread when Astrid spotted some Hunters standing next to large cages of dragons. She gently nudged her other half and pointed out the three guards. The two snuck over near the guards under the pretense of searching for a place to make-out. Hiccup softly brushed his lips against hers, enjoying the intense feeling of pleasure while still listening to the guards. They continued kissing and so on while the guards started to talk.

"Oy, look over there. Someone can't keep themselves apart for five minutes."

"Ugh, I'll be glad when we leave this rat-infested hole behind tonight and sail back to base. There's terrible food here."

"I'm with you there, mate, and some people don't know the meaning of privacy."

Hiccup then broke away from Astrid and stared into her eyes. With a look of understanding, they both turned away and walked back into the forest.

"So, how did recon go?" Nightwings, who had a good idea how recon went when he saw Astrid, was rewarded with making the couple blush. Stormfly gently whacked him with her wing.

"Be nice. You know in their situation we would do the same thing." The female dragon stood up for their human counterparts before snuggling back into Nightwings' side.

"Ahem, recon went well. We overheard that the Hunters are moving tonight. We arrived just in time. While we wait, might as well get comfortable. I'm going to go fishing, so we can eat before moving out tonight." The others acknowledged what he said and moved off to do their own thing. Astrid went to practice with her ax, Nightwings and Stormfly cuddled and napped some more, and Quickshot and Flamewheel had a shooting competition. Hiccup turned into his Night Fury, then took off to go fish. He returned an hour later, around 3, with plenty of fish for them to eat that night. He placed them on the ground before going to nap in the sun as Astrid was still practicing with her ax.
