Hiccup woke up to see his beautiful girlfriend laying next to him.  They were in the Sanctuary, where they had returned to after training dragons on Berk.  Now in the new Sanctuary, they weren't that far away and could return every night even if they were in Berk that day.  Hiccup's heart was at peace, but his mind was disturbed.  Having many enemies programmed him to fight, and right now, he wasn't fighting.  He almost preferred when there were still Dragon Hunters, at least then he would have something to do.  Now he was learning from his father how to lead the dragons while Stoick was pressuring him into trying to becoming Heir to Berk again.  He didn't have a hard time learning to lead, it was just a lot of work that bored Hiccup out of his mind.  He had to make sure there was enough fish for the day, remind dragons of their tasks, end any fights that might arise, remind dragons of their tasks, renew the ice around the Sanctuary using one of his powers, and remind dragons of their tasks.  Dragons tended to be flighty, and Astrid and Hiccup had been lucky with Nightwings and Stormfly as they were two of the more grounded dragons, in the sense that they could stay focused.  Finally, as the delegation to Berk, Hiccup had to visit every day and make sure everything was proceeding peacefully.  Often it wasn't so and he had to help with all of Berk's problems as well.  Astrid saw all of his duties tearing the man she loved apart, and convinced the King to give him a break.  Nightwings would take over as the delegation and the King would resume his duties in managing the nest.  Meanwhile, Astrid and Hiccup would be flying away to an uninhabited island to spend some time alone.

When the two were packed, Astrid attached all their bags to Night Fury Hiccup and climbed on.  He took off into the air, flying a little slower than usual due to the unfamiliar weight.  They found a desolate island and landed, Astrid removing all their bags before Hiccup returned to his Viking stage.  They found a cave to sleep in and Hiccup made a bed for them to sleep on.  Then the two left their stuff to explore the island they were on.  They found strange signs that someone had been here before, and Hiccup located several dragon traps.  These looked different than the ones the Dragon Hunters made, which worried Astrid and excited Hiccup that they might have another fight coming.  They continued to scout around until Astrid saw the beach they had landed on and they decided to try to follow the new trappers in a week after their vacation was over.  They stayed on the island for a week, talking in their cave, walking through the woods, and having some fun along the way.  Once their vacation was over, Hiccup quickly flew back to the sanctuary to drop off their bags and pick up Nightwings and Stormfly before returning to his m'lady.

Nightwings flew on Hiccup's right side, and Stormfly took left flank with Astrid on top.  They flew as fast as Stormfly could in the direction of the hunters and soon spotted a fleet of ships.  They circled around before Hiccup felt a pain in his head, and Nightwings and Stormfly started acting strangely.  Nightwings flew down and landed next to the enemies, whereas Stormfly threw off Astrid before doing the same thing.  Through his headache, Hiccup could still hear Astrid and he caught her safely on his back before continuing to fly around.  He saw another Bewilderbeast rise from the waters and challenge him.  Before he lost all control, the dragon prince managed to fly away with Astrid soothing him and attempting to alleviate his headache.

They reached the Sanctuary where Hiccup collapsed, exhausted from flying at full speed all the way there.  Astrid said, "My King, we discovered something terrible.  There is a man who is raising a dragon army with the assistance of a tamed Bewilderbeast.  The enemy has control of Nightwings and Stormfly, and Hiccup was barely able to get us out of there.  What shall we do?"

"Tell Berk to ground their dragons for now, we don't want them flying too far and being controlled by the other Alpha.  Now we prepare for war, are you ready, son?

Hiccup panted and stood up, saying, "I'm ready, dad.  What do you need me to do first?"

The King told his son, "I would like you to take charge of telling Berk with Astrid while I  direct the nest.  We don't have much time and you haven't built up a control over the others and they will just slip out of your grasp over and over."

Astrid leaped on Hiccup's back again as they flew over to Berk.  Once there, they told their news to Stoick who immediately did as they asked and let the Dragon King handle this situation.  However, he did offer his men as allies to the Bewilderbeast.

Upon returning, Hiccup and Astrid found that the entire nest was getting ready, filling canisters of Zippleback gas to act as grenades, collecting Monstrous Nightmare gel to create flaming projectiles, and other various duties were being attended to.  Hiccup walked up to his father with Astrid still on top and asked for something else to do.  Now the King just told them they had to wait.  So the couple retreated to their cave to await the arrival of the enemies of the King.

Upon the arrival of the warriors of Berk who were going to help in this battle, things started to look up for the defenders of the Sanctuary.  However, when the enemy fleet approached over the horizon, all hope left the brave souls of the Vikings and the dragons.  They had never faced such overwhelming odds.  Astrid took Hiccup aside and said, "I know you don't like doing it as you aren't in control, but you need to fly to the middle of those ships and go full fury mode on them.  We have no other options, even if you do this we might still lose."

Agreeing with a bad feeling, Hiccup took off towards the ships.  He shot some of them, but couldn't shake off a bad feeling that something was going to happen.  Feeling more despair than anger, he gave up on trying to go into fury mode and just started to try to take out ships.  He took out row after row, and yet they continued to come.  He barely made a dent in their armada.  Then the Bewilderbeast showed itself again and challenged their Alpha.  The two mighty beasts faced off.  Hiccup's dad slammed into the challenger, knocking it back a little before trying to follow on its attack.  Unable to quite pull it off, the mighty King defended himself from the evil Alpha with all of his skill.  They continued to fight as the armies around them began their engagement when it became clear that there would be no quick victory.  Fighting alongside his former clan members, Hiccup cleared out the humans in the opposing army with his sword inferno and his strength and speed that none could rival.  He then saw Nightwings flying towards the Bewilderbeasts while still under the control of the enemy and quickly morphed to fly after his best friend.  He reached Nightwings just as the other Night Fury turned around and blasted a plasma blast at his prince, knocking him out of the sky.  As Hiccup was falling, he couldn't right himself and figure out which way was down and which way was up.  Eventually, he hit the ground with a crack and lay there in a heap while Nightwings landed nearby, stalking over to stand above his opponent.  He charged up a plasma blast while looking at Hiccup, seeing him change into a viking in front of his eyes.  Nightwings hesitated, fighting off the Bewilderbeast for a moment, before falling back under its control and firing.
