We were told that we were perfect,
Eyes like our mother's,
smile like our father's,
We were told that we were worth something,
And that the world belonged to us.Nothing in the world was a problem,
Our friends, were just other children,
Not black not white,
Not fat not skinny,
Just other children. We admired ourselves in the mirror,
After our hair was braided or faces painted,
Not looking for flaws but looking for our beauty,
Because our mothers told us we were beautiful,
And we believed her. Then we grew older.
Eyes like our mother's looking at perfect sisters, friends and models,
We looked in the mirror differently for the first time,
Looking for the flaws in ourselves pointed out by others.Smiles like our fathers faded,
Tears falling at the sight of our big thighs,
Our protruding stomachs,
Our fat.We try our best to fix it,
Starving for unattainable perfection,
Throwing up our lunch to feel beautiful,
Because although my mother said I was beautiful,
Now I know she lied.-
