The car stopped at the yellow house. The boy looked at the house with no interest, it would never be a home for him. He would never have a home again. He would never have a normal life again. If his own parents couldn't accept him, why would a bunch of strangers?
"Come on, Lucas. Let's get you to your new home." the social worker, which was a woman on her early thirties. She smiled at the young boy, getting him out of the car. Lucas followed her silently as they reached the front door. "Remember, if you don't feel comfortable or anything, you can call me at any time." she reminded him, to which he just nodded.
The social worker rang the bell and the duo waited for the door to open. The door opened shortly after, revealing a little girl, probably ten years old. She had a head full of curls, which were hanging on her face. "Hello!" she greeted cheerfully.
Beside her came her mother, which was a short woman, a welcome smile on her face. "You must be the social worker, right?" she asked after she greeted them with a 'good morning'. The Spanish accent was clear on her words when she spoke.
"Yes." the two women shook hands. "I'm Sarah Parker." said the social worker.
The lot entered inside the house, while the little girl kept staring at the teenage boy. He looked shy to her since he had yet to say a word. She had to change that. "Hey, I'm Cammie." she said to him, earning only a blank look from the boy. "What's your name?" she asked him.
"Lucas." he said robotically. He sat next to Sarah and just stared at his feet, finding them interesting. Cammie tried to speak to him again, but he ignored her. The only he wanted was to leave, he would sooner or later. As soon as this lady would know what a disgrace he was, she would kick him out like his parents had.
Sarah and the other woman, whose name he heard was Victoria, spoke about how Victoria would take him into her house. Victoria had been part of the foster system for years and she was happy to help children in need. Lucas was fourteen and it was hard to find a couple who would adopt him and when Victoria heard about him, she immediately volunteered. Even though she already had two children of her own, she would treat Lucas just as he was hers.
Lucas didn't really care who she was, he wasn't going to stay long in this house, so he just stood there. He didn't want Sarah to go and just come back an hour later so be decided to speak before Sarah left. "I'm gay." he blurted out. He didn't dare looking at the disappointed face of his foster mother, so he stood up and went towards the door. He would wait for Sarah at the car.
"Where are you going?" Victoria asked, making Lucas stop.
"I... I'm going to the car." he said, not turning around. Why couldn't they just leave him?
"Why?" she asked softly. Lucas heard footsteps approaching him, so he guessed Victoria was walking to him.
"Because you don't want me." said Lucas sadly, still not looking at Victoria.
"And who said that?" Victoria already knew he was homosexual and that his parents had abandoned him for this reason.Lucas didn't know what to say, so he just remained silent.
"Earth to Lucas!" A hand waved in front of him.
"Huh?" Lucas looked around him confused at first. Then he remembered where he he was and who he was with. Camilla was next to him and Ronald was sat on the sofa in front of them. Victoria was no where to be seen.
"What were you thinking about?" Camilla asked.
"The first time I came here." Lucas answered truthfully. Before they could go back on memories, Victoria appeared with a tray. Just from the smell, Lucas knew what they were.
