When Everyone and Thing Is Broken

The drive home was slow; most probably feeling longer than it was due to the lack of conversation. The silence wasn't awkward, we were all busy in our minds, it was just quiet. In the background, music played from the Kerrang! Radio station, filling the car with rock that had me tapping gently on my knee; occasionally, a Black Veil Brides song started up, and we all grinned simultaneously to ourselves.

As we rounded the last corner onto our street, we were approaching the middle of Weightless by All Time Low, meaning the track was cut short as Jake hit the brakes, put the handbrake on and removed his keys from the ignition.

"Home" Jake hummed as he slid out his seat and let the door fall shut behind him.

"Here, I'll help" Andy smiled, quickly getting out of his side of the car and jogging round to mine; he opened the door for me and helped slide me out of the car, trying hard not let any of my weight end up on my injured ankle. After an hour’s drive both ways and time in the hospital (as well as the medication) my ankle wasn’t that bad now, to be honest. It was only a mild sprain to begin with, but Andy was always over-protective when it came to my safety; I wouldn’t have it any other way, though. My arm was a completely different story, though.

With my one good arm, I gestured towards the door with a smile, letting him now I was fine to start moving.

As a three, we approached the front door; Jake was just about to bring his key up to the lock when shouting from inside made us all jump.

“That’s not the point, though! He’s still living here! I’m your girlfriend, Jeremy! It’s just unfair!”

My head shot round to Andy in confusion.

What’s going on?

“Shit… um… that’ll be Sammi… She’s Jinxx’s girlfriend – I think he mentioned her to you on tour? They tend to keep their relationship to themselves, I guess. They’ve had a few… problems… in the past; I think we all know by now that when she breaks out the real names, she’s pissed” Andy whispered to me, shooting a glance at Jake, as if silently asking him whether or not he thinks we should go in.

Jake took a step back from the door, obviously unsure of whether we should go in or not. In the next couple of seconds, though, the decision was taken out of our hands.

The door swung open, revealing an angry looking red-head with flushed cheeks.

That must be Sammi.

She took a second to glance at each of us, her lips pulling into a frown of distain as she saw me. Then, without a word, she stormed past, leaving the front door ajar and an awkward atmosphere.

“Um, we should probably go in… See if Jinxx’s okay; fights like this get to him…” Jake suggested, stepping over the threshold almost cautiously.

Nodding in agreement, Andy gently squeezed my side and guided me in, slipping behind me as we walked through, as the door was only wide enough for one person.

As we approached the living room, we saw Jinxx, sitting on the sofa with his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands. He glanced up ever so slightly – alerted of our presence by our gentle footsteps.

Taking a seat next to his fellow guitarist, Jake slung an arm around his friend’s shoulders.

“You wanna talk about it?” he half whispered, like the air itself was fragile glass and would break if he spoke too loudly.

As Andy and I took a seat on the couch opposite, Jinxx gave a small shrug.

“Not really much to talk about. She arrived, we talked for like ten minutes, then she blew up at me…” he murmured, biting at his lip nervously, obviously still deep in thought.

“She just started an argument with you?” Andy questioned softly.

“Yeah… I thought she’d be happy that I was home… and she was… clearly didn’t last, though, did it?” he huffed quietly, as if he couldn’t quite believe the situation.

“How did the argument start? Well, what was she cross about?” Jake asked at the same time I realised the lack of two people’s presence, and said “where are CC and Ashley?”.

Jake looked uncomfortable, as if he didn’t want to answer.

“CC and Ashley went to the shops, to pick up some food and some painkillers for you, just in case the hospital didn’t give you any” he replied, answering my question but not Jake’s.

Maybe he was hoping we wouldn’t ask again, but nobody spoke up to continue the conversation in a different way, we all just sort of looked at him, waiting to find out why they were arguing.

When it became clear no one was going to speak up, I decided to re-ask the question; I would have felt bad for prying, but Jinxx was upset, and we would be able to help him more if we knew the problem.

“What were you arguing about, Jinxx?” I asked softly, slightly surprised when he finally looked up, gazing at me with sad eyes.

“You…”.
