Fuchsia Casts

"Well, if there's one slightly nice thing about this whole situation, it's that you get to choose the colour" . Doctor Pheeney smiled sympathetically, looking over at Andy and me, who were perched on the hospital examining bed in the private room.

The x-rays had come back about twenty minutes ago, and Dr Pheeny had been the one to give us the results; I'd broken my arm and mildly sprained my ankle, the latter of which they couldn't do much about, but the former was requiring a cast to make sure the bone set correctly.

Dr Pheeny stepped to the side of the tray he was previously hovering over and gestured to the various coloured bandages on the top. I always thought they only let children choose, but he either thought I'd appreciate the colour choice or saw me crying when we first came in and thought I was younger than I was.

"Um, would you judge me if I said the pink one?" I spoke up hesitantly, keeping my arm (which had already been wrapped in protective cotton) as still as possible; even though they'd given me fairly strong painkillers, I didn't want to risk causing myself more pain by moving it.

Dr Pheeny looked at me for a second before smiling and picking up the fuchsia coloured bandage.

"No, you can have whatever colour you want. Now, I need to dip this in water and then wrap this around the cotton padding. It'll dry hard" he explained, wetting the pink bandages as he spoke.

Over the next fifthteen minutes, Dr Pheeny finished applying my cast, as well as wrote up some medical notes. Once they were done, Andy helped me to my feet, obviously still concerned about my ankle, even though the sprain was only mild and I could walk with a little pain (thankfully, the painkillers were currently dealing with it).

I was slightly confused when we walked straight out; I would've assumed there'd be more medical forms/bills to sort out, but then I remembered Andy had gone off to do some paper work while I was talking to the Doctor one-on-one earlier. He must have taken care of the fees then, which I was incredibly grateful for. I didn't have medical insurance, so I would've been kinda screwed if it wasn't for Andy's generousity.

As we walked slowly to the car, Andy smiled down at me, squeezing my shoulder gently.

"So, why'd you choose pink? Just liked the colour, or?" he asked, briefly turning away to check for cars as we crossed the car park.

"Actually... I chose pink because it's breast cancer awareness month. My mum... she died when I was five because of it..." I answered Andy quietly, not because I was nervous about him knowing, but because it was a sensitive subject for me.

Even though I couldn't be certain, I was pretty sure that my mum's death was one of the reasons, if not the main reason, my dad started drinking so heavily. It affected us all; even though I was only five at the time, I still understood that that night, my mum wasn't coming home. And it destroyed me.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, Lukass" he whispered.

"Hey, it's not your fault" I replied, giving him a small smile. I didn't want to make him even sadder than he already was today, so I tried to lighten the mood. "So, where's the nompkin we call Jake? Did he purposely choose the furthest parking space from the entrance, or?"

Andy laughed lightly, guiding me towards the space Jake's shiny black car was parked in.

"He's right here!" he grinned, opening the door for me."Come on, let's get you home, danger magnet" .
