I was sitting at home. My mum was in the kitchen making supper and I was upstairs in my room reading quietly. An old classic, The Secret Garden. I've been upstairs since I've gotten home. I told my mum I was just going to do homework, but in reality, I had only a little, all finished at school, and I wanted to read. I was into my book. So much that I never heard my mum climb the steps and walk into my room.

"What are you doing? I thought you had homework." She said, angrily.

"I've finished," I replied glancing up from my book. I saw the look on her face and put down the book. "Sorry..."

"Shut up. This is the fourth time this week! If you don't stop lying, I'm taking away your books and increasing your chores!" It wouldn't phase me one bit if my chores were increased, but if she took my books... that would be a different story.

"I had homework though! I finished and decided to read! And this is only the third time!" I retorted.

"Oh, my bad! Only the third time you've lied!"

"I told you, I'm not lying!"

"Yes, you are. I'm your mother. Every time you lie, your left-hand twitches, so why don't you tell the truth?!?" I looked down, and sure enough, my left hand was shaking slightly.

"There's no truth to be told." I wasn't about to get into trouble. And technically I did have homework. Only it was done at school.

"Fine then." She walked over to me and held her hand out for my book. "Give it."

"But mum, I'm not lying! I can prove it! My homework is in my backpack! It's been in my backpack!"

"I don't want to hear any more. Hand over the book." I didn't. "NOW." She reached over and grabbed it.

"Mum! Really? My homework is right here! I'll show you!" I reached into my backpack and looked for my work.

"No. I'm keeping these for a week! And your chores haven't doubled. But instead, I want the whole house cleaned." She said turning to leave.

"Mum! You're unfair! I'm not doing anything!" I shouted.

"Fine. Then I'll burn the books!" She said, grabbing the other few books from my small collection.

"No!" But she already walked downstairs. I followed her she grabbed matches out of the cabinet and headed outside. I followed. As I stepped outside, a strange warmth went over me. Ignoring it, I followed my mum outside. She tossed the books on the ground and lit a match. "Mum stop!" I was about to cry. Those books were the only thing I had to escape the real, harsh world. She lowered the match.

"Cry and you are weak. And if you are weak, your not allowed to live in my household." She said as she tossed the match onto the books. Flames engulfed the books. I stared at the books. I wanted to reach in and grab them. But I couldn't. I watched the books slowly turn charred. I stared at them. Suddenly, the books flew up. One by one. Into the air. They landed and the flame was out. My mother screamed. I was too confused to move. My mum hurried inside and locked the doors. I headed back to the house after recollecting the burnt books. The door was locked.

"MUM! YOU LOCKED ME OUT!" I shouted inside. She appeared at the window.

"AWAY! AWAY FROM MY HOUSE YOU DEMON! NEVER COME BACK! I RAISED A DAUGHTER, NOT A DEMONIC MONSTER!" She shouted.

"THAT WASN'T ME! I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT WAS!" I shouted back.

"IT WAS YOU! NOW LEAVE!" I sighed and walked away from the house. She slammed the window shut and I began walking. I hugged my books closer to my chest and set out towards the patch of woods nearby. Once I arrived, I walked into the dark trees and found a small clearing to set up a kind of "camp". I slept under the stars that night. It was a restless sleep though. Sounds kept me awake. Paranoid, I eventually sat up and did a full scan. Once I was satisfied, I laid back down and closed my eyes. But after I fell asleep, I awoke minutes later. Something... no someone was watching me. I did my best to look for what it was, but it was too dark to see anything. I remained sitting, scanning the trees for the remainder of the night.
