”You okay?”, Esmeralda asked. They where on their way to the food supply to get ingredients for lunch and Mercy was unusually quiet today.
”Yeah, I just have much to think about”, she said absent.
”The almost death experience?”
”No, it wasn’t that bad.”
”So it’s something else?” They had now reached the supply and Esmeralda unlooked the door. Mercy nodded as an answer. ”What is it then?”
Mercy looked doubtfully at her before she closed the door and closed out the sunlight. ”Promise you don’t tell anyone about this, okay?”
”I promise on my heart that this stays between you and me”, Esmeralda said and put her hand at her heart. ”Now tell me.”
With the sunlight gone it was rather dark inside. She could barely see the other girl across the small root cellar. Mercy took a breath and start talking. ”Last night I went to a place that Bellamy showed me, to give me a reason to stay as he said it, and then he came there to. Also to think and one thing led to another and he kissed me.” She had just blurred it out so fast that she almost stumbled on the words but now it was said and the expression she could make out on Esmie’s face was not a happy one. Esmie looked both shocked and horrified.
”Bellamy kissed you?”, she asked amazed.
”Yes”, Mercy answered shyly.
”This is incredible”, Esmeralda started to walk around the small cellar while she gestured things with her arms. ”He have never, and I mean ever, showed any interest in anyone before.” Esmeralda turned to face Mercy again. ”But why so sad, newbie? He kissed you.”
”Well, today he barely looked at me and never met my eyes.” Mercy felt her cheeks flush when she thought about last night. He had kissed her. He was the one that had taken the step. The questions was why. ”I tried to talk to him.”
”What did you say to him?”
”I asked if he wanted to help me train and he said that he had other things to do.”
”Well, he is the king, he has a lot to do.”
”But he had not”, Mercy started to feel frustrated. ”He walked away and started to look around for an excuse.”
”Let me guess”, Esmeralda said. ”He didn’t find any.”
”Exactly.” It felt good to talk to Esmie, she didn’t mock her or laughed at her. She understood and that was what mattered. ”What do you think I should do?” Mercy sat down on a wooden box with a sigh. When Esmeralda didn’t answer, she looked at her. Esmeralda looked both horrified and shocked again. ”What is it?”
”He showed you that place to give you a reason to stay, right?”
”Yes, but I don’t see how-”
Esmeralda interrupted her. ”After what happened, it would be understandable if you left.”
”Where are you going with this?”
Esmeralda looked at her with pity. ”I think that Bellamy only kissed you to give you a reason to stay. He can’t loose more people around here.” Mercy just stared at her. Even though he had behaved strange earlier, the thought had never hit her. But it was the only reasonable reason for him to first kiss her and then ignore her. ”I’m so sorry, Merce.”
”Well, it’s my own fault. I got my hopes up, but he’s the king and I’m not even a Bellator.”
”Yes, you are”, Esmie said and took Mercy’s hands hers. ”You are on of us more than any one.”
