Chapter Two
"Debut""One peek never hurt anyone."
Devlin's voice whispers softly in my mind as I find myself reaching to tug on the grand red bow holding the box together.
After all, he did have a point.
Had a peek really ever hurt anyone? I mean it could be absolutely anything. My independence papers maybe? Or could it be my trust fund?
No, It couldn't be.
Not until I successfully complete the season.
What could it possibly be?
My thoughts alter suddenly to a darker time, the moment my life had changed.
"You're a disgrace! You'll never be married with that attitude. Pack your bags Adeleine, you'll be shipped off by tomorrow morning."
Instantly my hands retract from the gift box, scorned by the flames of the past. Mercilessly I send the box flying to the wall.
Ever since that night, that one night where it had all gone wrong, I swore never to speak of them for the rest of the life I have left to live.
I can still feel the rumble of anger that coursed through me so long ago. My eyes sting with the familiar pain of wounds, begging to release tears.
I refuse to cry.
Not for them.
I take deep breaths and rid myself of the negative energy I held so long ago.
I feel...betrayed.
My family sent me away, carelessly. I was spared not a goodbye from anyone. Not even my own mother and father. I was just simply cast away overseas to be reformed.
To be alone.
My mother was a vile, manipulative woman, and my father? So terribly gullible.
He was a sweet man. Blind, but sweet.
Mother changed him. She threatened his good name, his marriage, his children; and with every threat, he believed. All because of love.
How pathetic.
My aunts and uncles are all the same. Generations upon generations of evil. The only good left are my sister and I.
