Chapter Fifteen
"Great Escape...""Adele, you need to hurry! if you're any longer you're going to miss rehearsal."
Well Edith, That's precisely the point.
After breakfast we were instructed to head to our chambers and prepare for the next event which I would have easily done had I not had way more exciting plans.
It's safe to say upon reaching my bedroom I made an especially rapid beeline for the bathroom. As per Amelia's master plan, a fresh set of riding attire awaited me just within the medicine cupboard, and I wasted no time in changing and anticipating the signal.
And now here I am, blatantly ignoring Edith's constant rapping on the door as I sit cross legged and ready to go on the bathroom's windowsill.
"Adele! I'm beginning to think you're ignoring me on purpose."
Really? I wonder what could possibly give her that idea.
Perhaps it's the fact that I practically slammed the door closed in Edith's face and locked it before she even had the chance to follow me inside.
Or maybe it's the fact that the entire floor could probably hear her protests and yet here I am. Acting as if she isn't even there.
My point is, it's more than obvious that i'm ignoring her on purpose.
"Adele, you can't stay in there forever. One way or another you're going to have to leave and the queen is not going to be pleased when you do."
Right on cue a loud whistle sounds from just beyond my window, and a mature woman in riding gear suddenly steps into view.
I open the window eagerly with a broad smile.
"Are you Adeleine Winters?"
I nod.
"Wonderful, come along."
I swing my legs over the ivory sill and Edith's knocking intensifies.
"Adele, we're already late! The queen oughta' have both of our heads if we wait a minute longer!"
Not my problem.
I jump from the ledge and we're quickly on our way. The woman expertly leads us through the palace grounds until we reach a straightaway. Her pace slows considerably, and the smell of manure becomes incredibly strong.
"Thank you." I say softly. "I know you've put a lot at risk by agreeing to fetch me, and i'm sure it wasn't easy."
she turns to me slightly and gives me a short nod.
"You're welcome. It's not very often I hear that from a proper-woman."
I scoff and chuckle quickly after.
