Nikki; November 2010
In a world where my emotions
Seem to rule my every move
They will challenge my devotion
To seek and know the truth
The rest of October had passed in a blissful daze. Every night almost I would have dinner at the Tomlinson House. Jay, Louis’ mum made me the biggest birthday cake I’d ever seen once Louis told her when the big day was. His sisters had all made me string bracelets, and Louis had gotten me a stuffed bear. Later on, he’d told me that the girls all make each other bracelets like mine for their birthdays, and call them “sistership bracelets.” He also said that I was basically now his sister.
My birthday was also special for me because It marked my fourth date with Ethan. He’d snuck out with me after dark and we went to see Oktoberfest fireworks in the park. We’d stayed out until dawn kissing, and after dropping me back at my room, he’d asked me to be his girlfriend.
School was also less scary for me. I’d caught up on all my classes, and Mr. Tuckfield said I was top of his class. Now, at the end of November, it was a week until finals. We had the whole month of December, plus the first week of January off for Christmas break, but unfortunately my parents couldn’t pay to fly me back home and then back to school. I was planning on spending a week with Ethan, one with Louis, one with Katie and one alone in my dorm room. I was most looking forward to the week alone. Madi would be here too, as it was the last week of break and she couldn’t get a flight from the US any closer to start of term, plus I was looking forward to lying around the room just watching movies and eating.
But first I had to get through the marathon of other guest visits. First, I was staying with Katie. Her house was small and on the countryside. Her room was pink and girly, with wall stick-ons of bright, colorful flowers. It fit her perfectly.
“Ok Nikki, you can put your things in my closet. And the top bunk bed is all yours. I’m so excited!”
“Me too. I never had sleepovers with my sister. She’s older than I am, and when she wasn’t bossing me around, she was hanging out with her boyfriend.” And it really was like one huge sleepover. At first I was worried that with Katie being younger than me, it would get awkward. But in actuality, it was fun. We stayed up late every night watching movies and going for walks outside. She lived in the kind of neighborhood where the kids could be gone for four hours but the parents didn’t have to worry because they knew the kids were probably either next door or in their tree house. I felt really safe at her house.
The last night before I was off to Louis’ was the best. After her parents had gone to bed around ten, we built a fort with the bunk and snuck in flashlights to illuminate it.
“Okay. I got you a present,” I said, reaching over to my purse that was laying on her floor.
“I got you one too. You first,” she said, holding out a gift bag she’d pulled from under her bed. I reached inside and pulled out a soft purple fleece blanket. I unfolded it and saw that the otherside was made of fabric designed with white musical notes on a purple background. The ends were tied in bows around the edges. “I made that for you. Do you like it?” I leaned over and gave the tiny girl a hug.
“I love it! No one’s ever made me anything like this before. Now you.” I handed her a tiny gold box. She reached inside and pulled out the necklace I had bought her. It had a tiny silver gymnast on the end of a long, fine chain.
“Wow.” Was all she said, smiling.
“It’s you. A tiny gymnast.” She leaped on top of me, smothering me in a hug.
