The feeling of something prodding my in the cheek woke me up. Next came the feeling of pain in my body came. It was a dull pain, like something after a hard day of working out or something of the like. I opened my sore and heavy lidded eyes to see that the something prodding my cheek was the tip of a boot.
I lifted my gaze and saw the boot was connected to a leg connected to a man. Go figure. The man was dressed in all black with white slicked back hair, cutting cheekbones, flat white lips, and bored blue eyes. He crouched before me and reached out to move some of my dirty blonde hair out of my face to apparently see me better but I flinched away. The smile on his face told me he was pleased by the action.
I didn’t need to be told what he was. The hairs on the back of my neck standing on end, the sound of his heart, the power surrounding him and the arrogance were a big hint. He was a vampire and most likely of the coven. I should have been scared but I couldn’t muster up the emotion no matter how hard I tried.
In truth, I had kind of asked for this.
By pushing Kale away, going out to feed alone and unprotected had left me wide open for this situation. Hell, I had even told Kale I had wanted this to happen. I wanted to be put out of my misery and was unafraid of death. Years of being sick had kind of conditioned the fear of death clean out of me. I had waited for it everyday.
Now I was a bringer of death.
The irony was not lost on me.
“You are Ruby D’Arcy?” The man asks, pulling me out of my musings.
I raise an eyebrow, “Were you unsure because that would be bad kidnapping skills on your part.”
He chuckles but it’s one of bare amusement. Like I said something cute. I really don’t like this man, I decide. The pompous stance and the arrogance in his reactions just cement my dislike of him. I can now see why Kale probably didn’t want me to come here, besides being killed. I’d most likely kill myself if I had to deal with this guy all the time.
“I can see why he likes you. Your amusing and you aren’t terribly unattractive.”
“Wow, thanks for the kind of complement.”
Again he chuckles shaking his head. “See what I mean? Amusing.”
I don’t answer. Instead I roll my eyes.
Apparently this is the wrong move because his boot collides with my nose and my eyes water up with tears. I gasp at the pain radiating in my face and go to cradle my nose but find that something is pulling on my wrist. Looking down I notice I have reinforced steel chains on each of my wrists tying me to the cold black marble of the floor.
A snowy white hand comes down and scoops some of the blood out from under my nose and I watch as he sticks my blood into his mouth. He closes his eyes and then opens them with disgust clear in his features. He dramatically spits on the ground and shoots me a cold glare.
“You half breeds always taste the worst.” He spits.
“Half breed?” I ask curiously.
He lifts a snowy white eyebrow. “Did Kale not tell you why he was hiding you from me?”
I shake my head.
I can already feel my nose going back into place as small cracks can be heard as it shifts back in place. I’d love to say it doesn’t hurt but it does. I’m simply too interested in what this man has to say to care. All this time Kale had been dropping hints but never actually telling me anything about why I had to careful. Now, no matter how much of an ass this man is he has the key to me knowing who I am.
