Chapter 7

Everything so far had gone fine but I was still unsure about touching people with my ungloved hands, scared about hurting them, and the lights flickering all the time didn’t help.

“Here you go and thank you for coming, I hope to see you soon”

“Of course and thank you. I’m so glad that Lucy has found such lovely help. She deserves it that way. She’ll have some time to herself”

“Thank you I’ll be sure to tell her”

“Great well good bye and I think that you should do something about those lights.”

“We will goodbye “

And with those words the last customer of the morning left. I gave a sigh of relief and as if on cue the lights stopped flickering and I wondered if my powers (let’s call them that) had anything to do with my emotions, if they were linked in some way.

I shook my head and stopped thinking about it because it was giving me a headache.

I placed the closed sign on the door and then went to the backroom to have lunch. I had taken out my paper wrapped sandwich and put it on the table. Then I went and took the soda can and that’s when the most bizarre thing happened. The can literally melted in my hands. I yelped in surprise and I stood there shocked with what used to be a can of soda in my hand

After what seemed like a life time I snapped back to reality, threw the melted can in the bin and quickly put on the gloves that were my only protection so that nothing like that would happen again to anything or anyone.

I slowly ate my sandwich, still scared and shocked by the harm that I could cause just by touching someone or something.

That’s when images of what I had done to that man came back to me. I had killed him, and that’s when I promised to myself to not let anyone touch me without my gloves on.

When I looked up at the clock just as I was finishing my sandwich I saw that it was time to open up again. And with a deep sigh I went back and opened the door to let a chaotic day continue.

The last customers had just left and I was looking round making sure that I had replaced the things that had been bought for tomorrow. I counted the money that I had collected during the day and then made sure that the cameras were working well.

I took my jacket and put it on, then went to the door, turned on the alarm and finally closed the door. That’s when I remembered that I had to make a copy of the keys during my lunch hour, but with everything that had happened I had totally forgot.

“Great I hope that they’re still open”

I looked at my watch and saw that it was quarter to nine so I still had fifteen minutes. I went and sprinted with all my force towards the hardware shop.

Thank God that it wasn’t too far. I arrived with ten minutes to spare. I stopped and took deep breaths to get my breath back. When I was breathing properly again, I entered the shop and there at the counter was a man in his seventies.

“Hello, good evening, I know that you’re about to close but I was wondering if you could make a copy of these keys”

I took them out of my pocket and placed them in front of him. He took them in his hands and inspected them.

“Well if you had come a little bit earlier I could have finished them for you today but at the time that you came I could give them back to you tomorrow morning”

“Fine then I’ll just tell Lucy that I got held up with something during my lunch work and that you’ll give me the keys tomorrow”

“Did you say Lucy?”

“Mmm yes she’s my boss and I live with her to keep her company and make sure that she’s alright. Why?”

“Oh nothing don’t worry about it dearie, for Lucy I‘ll finish them today but of course I will need your help”

“Really that’s great. Thank you so much and of course I’ll help you”

And with those words we went to the back and started working on copying the keys. All that activity with the two of us took about an hour and during that time he would tell me stories about Lucy that made us both laugh especially when I told him how my first encounter with her ended in her having a sprained ankle (at that he got a little worried but I reassured him that I was alright) and me finding a job and a place to stay and her to have friend (at hearing those final words he got really happy).

“Well that’s the last one, thank you for helping me”

“You’re welcome, I had a lot of fun”

We continued talking as he closed the shop and I accompanied him to his car.

“You know if you weren’t working for Lucy I would have employed you in my shop”

“Oh, thank you”

“You’re welcome, well here is my car “

“Oh right um thank you for everything”

“You’re welcome It was nothing”

“Of course it was I’ll make it up to you in some way”

“Really its fine but I have to go now give my regards to Lucy”

“I will. Thank you John.”

And with those words I started my walk back home. Once I got home I opened the door with my keys and placed the spare keys in the drawer of the furniture that was next to the door in the entryway.

“How was your day?’

“Horrible, people here love to talk and gossip and I had to answer lot of questions”

At that she laughed heartedly.

“That’s what happens in small towns sweetie”

“Well I don’t like it, they’re too noisy but thank God that John lifted up my emotions he’s such a sweet guy”

“Oh you went to see John?  Yeah he sure is”

That’s when I looked at her and I could see a faint blush appearing. I smirked and went to prepare dinner leaving her in her day dreaming. I made sure I would pay more attention to those two.
