Chapter5

I didn’t know where I was. Everything around me was pitch black but I could distinguish some shapes which made me suppose that I was in a forest.

That’s when I heard heavy footsteps of someone that was running towards me. I didn’t know what to do. It was as if my legs had a mind of their own and suddenly I was running towards an unknown destination but the only thing that I was sure of, was that I had to get as far as I could from that man.

I was running and running as fast as my legs could carry me when suddenly I tripped over what could have been a loose branch and hit my head against a rock.

I was so disoriented, tired and dizzy. The next thing I knew I was being caught by the neck and puIled against a tree.

He started to shout at me but I couldn’t make out the words because of the loss of oxygen. When I thought that things couldn’t get worse I started to feel something sharp slicing my skin open and I let out an agonizing scream. I just wanted everything to end and I could feel myself going slowly.

After what could have been an eternity, I slowly started to hear as if someone was calling my name and shaking me at the same time.

I jolted upwards, breathing heavily, almost gasping for air and sweating like a pig. That’s when I started to cry, letting my walls down and let what happened to me consume me and register with me. That’s when I felt a comforting set of arms encircle me and hug me, letting me know that everything was going to be ok and that I wasn’t alone in the world and that I always have someone there to help me stand up again when I fall.

Lying there in her arms I fell asleep remembering the good old days with my mom and my brother before he destroyed it.

The next morning I woke up and found myself alone in the bed and the sun shining through the curtains. I slowly got up making sure not to touch my sore parts and went towards the window. There I drew the curtains open and I could see the sun shining brightly up in the sky, you could hear the birds singing and little kids playing and people laughing. It was almost comical how these people lived as if they didn’t have a care in the world and each day people died or disappeared….

They couldn’t even imagine how many people desired and willed to have that life, me being one of them.

I sighed and took a last longing look towards that scene and headed towards the kitchen after getting dressed to face the real word.

Once I got down the last step, I took a deep breath and went into the kitchen. There sitting on a chair was Lucy. The one person who had been witness to my break down.

I looked up at her and she sat there smiling and said in a caring tone, the complete opposite of the one I used yesterday night to justify me being on the run, “About yesterday Amy sweetie, I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have acted like that. It wasn’t right, especially after what you did to me, taking me back home and cooking me dinner…. you made sure that I was alright when it wasn’t your obligation and I’m sorry.”

“Thank you you’re apology means a lot to me, but about yesterday night“

“Don’t worry about it, it’s all forgotten just know that when you want to talk about it or anything else I’ll be here to listen”

A few tears started to fall and I quickly dried them off and then went and gave her a big hug “thank you. You don’t know how much that means to me”

I quickly got up and went towards the fridge to take out some eggs and make some scrambled eggs. I was cooking them when Lucy suddenly took me out of my musing.

“You know since I sprained my ankle I won’t be able to take over the store and since you’ve be so kind and I know that you’re looking for a place and a job, how about you work for me and stay here “

“Thank you so much for the job I will gladly take it but I couldn’t possibly impose in your own home”

“Of course you can my own house is big enough for two and it would mean so much to me and I won’t feel so alone in this house and you’ll have a safe place to stay. Really it’s no trouble.”

“Fine then if you insist but I’ll be paying for my own stuff if I need anything and half the electricity and water bill”

“If that is what takes for you to stay that’s fine with me.”

“Great then if you don’t mind I’ll be move in this week end, in the guest room right?”

“Well no I think that there is another place that I think you’ll like more. Here come with me”

I turned off the stove and followed her towards what looked like the basement. Once we arrived in front of the door, I opened it and there was a vast room with some windows and the walls were a light blue colour.

“This is great wow thank you”

“So I take it you like it”

“Yes a lot”

“Well what are you still doing here, chop chop, we have lots of things to do this week end before you start work on Friday”

that just made me finally crack up uncomfortably all the way back to kitchen to have my breakfast with my new room-mate.
