Eleven years earlier...
The sun beamed across my caramel glossed skin as I ran. I was laughing and playing tag with Lucas through the palace gardens. Even though he was two years older than me, at age nine, we always had so much fun playing together. I was "it". It felt like I was running after him so long I didn't think I would ever catch up to him.
I got so close and then he would somehow still get away. I hurried my feet as my long brown, wavy curls swayed behind me; my hand was inches away from his back. When he noticed he dodged to the right. He was laughing harder as he continued to run, his dimpled cheeks stretching across his face, showing the baby tooth he just lost. His deep sapphire eyes gleamed as the sun crossed them. I wish I could have lost a tooth so I could get money from the tooth fairy. He somehow always did things first, and I felt like I was always trying to catch up to him.
We could see our mothers in the distance, walking and talking as we played. In that moment that called for us.
"Come now you two!" Ms. Flora said. Flora was Lucas' mom she was always so nice to everyone, even to me and my family. "We all have things to do!"she waved.
In that moment Lucas stopped his movement, I took the opportunity to grab his back.
"Ha! I got you Lucas!" I said smiling wide in a sing song voice.
"It was only because my mother called us. That was just luck." He shrugged.
He then fixed the brown scarf that was tied around my forehead which was out of place. I then looked down at the brown sash that was tied around my long white skirt and fixed it too.
"You always become a mess so quickly," Lucas shook his head. "I don't know what you'd do without me." He shook his head and crossed his arms. I glared at him and twisted my mouth. He cheesed hard and started to run away again. I growled and launched after him as he ran in the direction towards our moms.
Lucas screamed playfully and ran behind his mom. "Mommy! Hazel's gonna get me!" Just as I was about to grab him Ms. Flora stopped me as she laughed. Lucas hid behind her leg and made funny faces and stuck his tongue out at me.
"Now Hazel," She cooed. "Don't let him get to you."
"But Ms. Flora," I prolonged. "I have to get him! He's always running." I tried to push past her but she kept me still as Lucas snickered.
"I'm sure you'll get him next time." My mom said as she rubbed her stomach, that held my little brother or sister. I huffed and stood still.
"They will be at it forever, Elaine," Ms. Flora said to my mom.
"Mommy?" Lucas said. "Can we play a little longer?"
"It's getting late, dear."
"Please?"
"Ten more minutes and then it's off to bed you two."
We both smiled and jumped happily as we ran back through the meadow; the sun was starting to set. He started to chase me, I ran as fast as I could but not long after he always caught me. He grabbed me and pinned me to the ground.
"I gotcha, Hazel!"He laughed and started tickling me.
I laughed and laughed until I started to cry. "No! Lucas, Stop! I can't breathe!" He continued to tickle me as I laughed harder. "No! Stoppp! You're gonna make me pee!"
"Ewww," he said giggling and lifted his hands away.
I then attacked him with my hands and began to tickle him. "Now it's your turn!" He started to laugh until his face turned red.
"Okay! Okay! I'm sorryyy." He laughed. "I'll stop!"
"Okay, I will show you mercy, just this once!" I let him go and sat in the grass and laid back.
He sighed, sounding relieved, "Oh my gosh! Thank you!" he took another deep breath and laid back on the grass next to me. We watched the sky as the fluffy white clouds passed.
"I'm glad we're friends Hazel," Lucas said.
"Me too," I smiled.
"You're my best friend." He said as he took my hand and held it.
"You're mine too."
We sat there until our moms allowed us to, just watching the fluffy white clouds drift away. We watched the sky change colors from a yellow, to an orange, and a reddish purple until the sun was gone and the sky was dark.
