Chapter 2
"So let me get this straight, my mother got you a maid." My cousin Anna says as we sit outside on my porch. She lived in town, so she visited regularly, and if you haven't figured it out, she's aunty Cherry's daughter.
"Yeah, how's the wedding plans going?" I asked her, trying to change the subject.
"It's going good and don't change this subject! I still have questions to ask ya. How do ya feel about it?" She asked as she took a sip of her coffee.
"Well, I don't mind, but I truly just want some privacy. After all that's happened, I just need some time to myself." Getting a little help around here wouldn't be so bad but I truly want to be by myself, guess I'm at that stage when I feel like everything's against me, it had only been a year since my mother died.
"Want me to talk my mum out of it." She asked.
"Nah, your mama would be disappointed and unhappy if we really tried and talked her out of this shit." I say, focusing my eyes on the barn. Today was Saturday, which meant a lot of work for me to do around here. That's how it usually is. I'm just doing a shit load of work.
"I guess you're right. Do you know when she's coming and how long she's staying?" Anna asked.
"She'll probably be here in an hour or two, and I'm not sure about how long she's staying here." I said honestly.
"In an hour! okay, that's my cue. Make yourself and your house presentable, and please be nice, okay bye." She said as she sprung up from her chair and left as I waved bye to her. I wouldn't have wanted her to go, but it would be awkward if she were here. She has a way of making things.... Awkward.
With that, I got up, had a shower, and dressed in my usual check shirt with my faded jeans and the all to famous cowboy hat. I hope this Maria girl has experience working on the farm. Work around here is definitely not easy.
Just then, I heard a cab coming up the driveway. You pretty much hear cars come up easily since the pebbled road made a lot of noise.
I walked slowly down the stairs and as I was about to come out I heard a knock on the door. I walked slowly to the door and opened.
As soon as that door opened, I was left completely breathless; standing in front of me was the most beautiful Mexican girl I have ever seen. Her long brown wavy hair and her effective emerald green eyes left me completely and utterly mesmerized. Her every curve was mouth-watering, damn! Just looking at her left me fantasying.
"Hi." She whispered with a slight smile.
"Um, hello, I'm Ryder Marshall. Come in." I said as I snapped back to reality. I took her bags from her and said." You're probably tired. Let me show you your room." She smiled and nodded, something about the way she smiled had me lost for words, but there was something off about her smile, it felt like she was forcing it, as if she wasn't happy.
I walked up the stairs and headed to the 4th bedroom. "So this is your room, when you're ready we can discuss your work." I said as I placed her bags on the floor and left.
Damn! She was more than beautiful. I got to my room and closed the door shut. This girl was going to distract me when all I needed was concentration.
After a few minutes, I walked out of my room and was ready to start working in the barn, but just as I was about to leave, I heard her little timid voice.
"Uh, Mr. Marshall I-is it okay if we discussed the working arrangements." She said softly.
"Alright. Mondays to Fridays, you work in the house and nothing else, just one rule, don't go into my room and on Saturdays and Sundays, and you're free to do as you like. Are there any issues with any of that?" She looked as if she was trying to process all of this until she spoke up.
"No, sir." She said as she was about to walk away. I stopped her
"And please do not call me sir or Mr. Marshall, I think Ryder is well suited." I said with a slight smile and walked out the house and into the barn.
Working with the horses made me forget about things that weren't right in my life, its as if they have a power to make you at peace, well it's the way I felt about them, they were beautiful creatures. But working in the barn today was different; I had her on my mind, Maria. She was just so.... Unreadable. I couldn't figure her out, normally I can tell what a girl truly is like, if she's a girl that goes around, an old fashioned girl or the snobby kind but with Maria, I had no idea what kind of person she's like.
As I finished cleaning up the horse manure, I felt my shirt was completely soaked, so I took it out and placed it on a fresh pile of hay.
"Rider -" I turned around to see Maria staring right at my body. Her eyes were everywhere. I smirked at her and turned around to give her a full view.
"Something wrong?" I asked.
"Umm, l-lunch is um ready." I was quite taken back that she had just got here and already started working.
"Uh, I don't eat lunch on Saturdays." I said honestly, Saturday was always filled with work for me, this ranch demanded l lot of work.
"Um, shouldn'tnI just give it to the horses?" She asked in her sweet timed voice, fuck my life she sounded like an angel.
"I don't think that's a good idea, wouldn't want to be spoiling them. Okay, maybe a short break wouldn't hurt."
"Um okay." She said as she hurried away trying to keep her eyes off me but I knew very well that she wanted to look.
This is going to be fun
